Oh Hi.

• #2128
I was just thinking the same thing.
Hello Andy Dub.

• #2130
@Apone Ardbeg Uigeadail is lush
-
• #2131
Bulleit seems expensive at £26, right?
-
• #2132
Mixing bourbon.
-
• #2133
Bourbon and coke ftw
But it seems spendy. Isn't WR only like 32 quid?
-
• #2134
Bulleit Rye is decent
-
• #2135
Indeed. But really - there are very few of the small batch bourbons that are justifiably more expensive than WR. That puts anything else around that price bracket under more scrutiny. So yes, Bulleit bourbon seems expensive because for about another fiver you can get WR.

• #2136
WR is a bit too easy to drink - not very complex for me and too smooth - I think there are better, cheaper - certainly more interesting. Elijah Craig 12 year old in M&S for instance - £26

You being a Texan and all that. Have you tried the Balcones Brimstone?
Had it last weekend for the first time and it knocked me for two. Lovely stuff and I'll be buying a bottle on my next trip if I can get hold of it.

• #2138
Also, MOM has 20 y/o Pappy van Winkle in stock for a mere £1,245 a bottle. Bargain!
-
• #2139
I've not had that (not that I recall anyway). Might grab a bottle. Ta

it's nice, takes a drop of water well (it's quite alcoholic on the nose to begin with but settles down)
I really like it finished my bottle the other night would bang again

I did. I had a friend bring some over. It was amazeballs.
Balcones also came and did a tasting at the SWC. I got go chat with their head of production for a while. They approach things quite differently as they were all beer brewers first so when they make the mash, they treat it like a craft beer. Longer fermentation at lower temps before they go to distill it. That gives them fewer harsher ketones to remove. That's their approach anyway.
I love their stuff - very pricey over here. I did get to taste some of the single barrel that they bottle once a year for their employees. Woof!

Full on hipster whiskey then 😀
Did you get to try the baby blue as well?
The Brimstone is a real treat but I imagine it's not to everyone's taste. It brought memories of eating smoked baby back ribs which I haven't had for 15 years...
-
• #2143
Yeah - that part of Texas was wearing check shirts, and old jeans, trucker caps and beards before it was cool....
Not a fan of the Baby Blue although I do like what they have tried to do. They were talking about how hard it is to source - not a lot of growers. They basically cleaned out the Texas/Oklahoma/New Mexico native American tribes' grain stores with the first batch and had to go find growers in Kansas. Different soil, different flavours, different outcomes, etc.
Keep an eye out for Rimfire from Ranger Creek - http://www.drinkrangercreek.com/whiskey/
Mesquite smoked but actually only tastes like dark cocoa. Not a bad thing, but not smoky like I would have expected.

Very interesting. I'll get the Brimstone first. Just stumbled across this article on Balcones http://m.sacurrent.com/sanantonio/texas-whisky-beats-scotlands-finest-in-london-blind-tasting/Content?oid=2247797
Will keep an eye on the Ranger Creek too.

The basic single malt is very, very, very drinkable too. Dangerously so.

• #2147
The 23 was available when I picked up my bottle of 15 recently and I'm pretty sure it was in the 6-800 region.
Really wish I'd bought a second 15 to sell on to cover the cost of the first one. -

Just bought a Kilchoman Machir Bay for a holiday treat. I had a great conversation with a shop assistant at The Whisky Exchange just off the Strand who convinced me it was the one to go for. Lagavulin 16, Ardbeg Uigeadail, and Compass Box Peat Monster have been my whiskies of choice for quite a while. Loved the sound of Kilchoman's relatively small-scale set up. Anyone tried it?

• #2149
The bottle of Jura ValuDe-Lite© I got for a tenner in the Co-op firesale has been nice to slosh back. Nice scotch that is dead cheap tastes even better.

I've tried a couple of theirs, liked them a lot.
There's only really the 10 year old and Uigeadail worth considering, can't really go wrong with the 10 year old for the price. The Uigeadail is better, shame it's a no age statement though.
