  • I have such a love/hate relationship with this ride: I love the ride, I hate how hard I find it. IN. Maybe I'll treat myself to 68gi this year.

    2014 Edition

It is possible I may be able to find some one else to lead and organise, so the ride could still happen. I have already been asked if it will happen, so clearly some people want to go. If there's enough support it would be more likely to happen, so if you'd like to ride please put your name on the thread and I'll see what can be done.

  • I loved this last year. But I haven't ridden anything other than a commute in months. Tenative hopeful yes.

  • Loved this ride last year, was a twisted kind of fun.

  • I did this one last year and found it seriously 'hard'

  • In if time permits

  • With much regret I have decided that I cannot organize the Hard Day ride for 2014.

    There are two reasons.

    • My fitness to ride is doubtful. I certainly don’t want to be in a position where I start with a group and then become a liability. For this reason, even though I might be able to ride, I am certainly not able to lead.

    • My Road Race organizing job is already taking up quite a lot of time. At the moment I don’t want to take on anything else which may involve ‘risk assessment’.

There’s no reason why the ride shouldn’t go ahead without me just as long as there’s some one else prepared to lead. I’m only too willing to give any help I can, for example: check that the café is available, provide last year’s route sheet, write a report etc.

Let me know what you think.

  • Clubman - I always saw this ride being organised but was never able to join. I usually just do solo runs but it would be a shame if we didn't keep this running so happy to help make it happen if we ran it on a Sunday. Rather than a straight run out of town how about a loop (I like getting home on my own steam) starting at Hampton Court, the original start point I believe?

  • I'd certainly be interested in joining if this goes ahead

  • I'm still in for this. What about Sunday the 26th? I'm happy to get routes from previous HDiJs from you Clubman and put something together. It could start from Hampton Court if that interests more or from the clubhouse as in previous years.

I feel like we're running out of January already...

  • I could not do the Sunday, but could do the Saturday.

    ;-(

  • Would swap but have the Brighton ting.

Of course if more people say yes to Sat then fair enough!

  • Two lists? one for Saturday, one for Sunday?

  • I’m very pleased you’re thinking of going ahead without me. It’s now entirely up to you to decide how you want to arrange things, but here’s some information and a couple of suggestions.

The HD in J has never been on a Sunday in the past – that was because I didn’t want to conflict with clubruns. The original 1959 ride was on a Sunday, but that was a West Twickenham RC club run.

It has never started from Hampton Court. There’s no reason why it shouldn’t, except that if you’re going to Berinsfield it would put about 20 miles onto the day’s total. If you want a similar ride to recent years, I suggest as a meeting point ‘The Orchard Café’ 776, Staines Road, Feltham (01784 258795), although this is **not **open on Sundays. Unfortunately it's on the main A30 road, but it’s a very quick ride into Staines and from there you can use last year’s route.

The Swan Hotel at Staines has proved a good finishing point in the past. For various reasons I don’t want to suggest using the Sailing Club, and in any case I don’t think it’s really necessary.

    Naturally, these are only suggestions.

When you have decided on a date, if you like, I’ll see if Paul Holdsworth or any other HDW members want to join you (there won’t be many).

Last month, quite by chance, I met one of my companions from that 1959 ride. I don’t think I’ve seen him since about 1961. He’s a bit older than me and not 100% fit, but he still retains a strong interest in the bike game. If the ride comes off I may wheel him out to meet you at the finish.

  • There is no way I can do both this and the Brighton Ride, as much as I want to. Too much commuting.

Next weekend too soon? Either day.

Here is the route from 2012.. Via Staines Sailing Club, planned start/finish.

  • Are the people interested local to Staines area and cycling to the start or taking the train from town? The first train (coming from Twickenham) gets to Staines at 7.19.

How about we use roughly the same route as last year finishing at the Swan as Clubman suggested?

Are we thinking 26th or earlier?

  • I can't make that weekend :-( . But go ahead anyway and enjoy.

  • as with some others, i'm planning on Brighton on 25th. sadly i don't have the free time or the legs to do this the day after

When you have decided on a date, if you like, I’ll see if Paul **Holdsworth **or any other HDW members want to join you (there won’t be many).

    any relation?

  • I'd be up for taking part on 25th January. My fitness is highly questionable so would not be keen on leading the ride.
