  • Sometimes I'll skate 5km to a spot and 5km back

    Get a biek m8.

  • Wrong foru…. Oh.

  • Hey, stupid question I know but how do you push with the flat of your foot rather than the ball of it?
Went for another skate today and after about 30mins my calf tightened up so much I couldn’t push off with it. Thinking ive been using the action of pushing off on your toes rather than whatever the correct motion is.

    Any suggestions?

  • Bend the knee on your front (board) foot way more than you think you need too. Really squat and push through the floor.

  • If you get cramp you're doing it right, it's not a natural motion.

  • The pain doesn’t feel like I’m doing it right.
May tighten the kingpin nuts as the board wobbles an awful lot, when I push off, and step on it. Seems to be veering off usually to the right as I start. Could be just my body position, but it feels like a lot of motion to have to constantly correct..

  • Swing your leg from your hip more, don’t push as much with your knee.

  • @Drakien is right. Think of pushing as a continual one leg half squat (find the balance that you can hold it and roll comfortably with your pushing foot dangling). Once you have the balance you can use your pushing foot to slow down by dragging it.

But back on to the pushing foot, don't flat foot it, much more effective and comfortable to use the toes / ball area in a strong swing (like @Tonts said) but keep it light on contact. You might see some pros stamping down to get some aggressive speed but you don't want to be doing that for 20mins around the park.

  • One thing to remember is that skateboarding forces you to move in lots of weird ways that your muscles and joints aren’t used to. Not really an issue when you’re in your teens, but when you’re at average forum age, it can take a while for your body to stop complaining and get on with it.
It feels like every time i go for a skate and I try something I’ve not done before, I’m committing to a couple of days of mild aches in funny places.

  • average forum age

    How dare you.

  • It’s about 25, right?

    Right?!

  • I hear you, the ache/cramp in my calf has subsided somewhat, still get a niggle today if I push off, or over extend as I walk, but nothing as bad as yesterday. Off the board today, and watched some beginner how to video's yesterday and today, and I think I'm getting what @Drakien and @Tonts are saying, think I've been pushing with my knees and toes, rather than the whole leg, which is why I haven't been getting much distance with my pushes, and have to push a lot to get some speed/momentum up.

Will get back on the board tomorrow, but will start doing some balance and pushing exercises on the board over the next week to see if I can work out the kinks and get more stable and comfortable in that range of motion..

  • Sorry to spam (again!) but surely someone here wants some cheap, hardly skated Indys?!

139 (so, for a 8" deck or thereabouts), hollow forged, £50 posted to you.

Otherwise I'm probably going to put them in a box and forget about them, as I've not been been able to bring myself to sell anything on Ebay for a while now.

  • but when you’re at average forum age

so, for a 8" deck or thereabouts

You've pointed out the problem already.

  • :-D

I know, right? I bought them for the first deck I bought since skating as a teenager in the late 90s. 8” felt wide after skating toothpicks with bearing-sleeve wheels!

  • Only just found this tread and its pretty cool to have a read through. I will post some pics up of my collection when I get a moment.
Now don't tear me a new one but has anyone got an electric skateboard? Only been looking at the cheap second hand cruisers like the razor but thought it would be ace to pop down to the shops on. One of the smaller cheap razors has come for sale locally for sensible money.

  • Do you still have this more sale mate?

  • Who is it here who’s involved with Essay mag? Pretty sure it was here, anyway.

I was struggling to order a copy to the UK - wondered if there’s anywhere I can get one here.

  • I’m loving this. He’s got a great attitude.

At about 9:48 where it looks like he’s going to throw his deck in frustration. [chef kiss]

  • Scored some of these in the last remaining UK9 in the local outlet.
