  • I'm in Brockley

me too! deptford is pretty decent.

  • Ah sweet, yeah Deptford is great, as long as I get there early enough and avoid the busy kid lessons.

  • Oof

  • These arrived this morning, live and direct from Girl OG pro Jeron 'Dubs' WIlson, who is having a clear out on eBay from his personal stash. First one is for my older brother's 50th birthday present in a few months, he introduced skateboarding and new music into my world by bringing home crusty old VHS tapes, used and passed around like old porn mags, of the Santa Cruz vids Streets of Fire and Wheels of Fire, and later Plan B and onto the early Spike Jonze skate vids, which feature Dubs. My brother has been a Spike fan ever since, so he gets this one, that I got Dubs to sign 'happy 50th bro'

And this one is for an old stoner school mate who has recently taken up skating again after a break of a few decades, so knowing Dubs is partial to the ganj I asked if he'd sign that one too. I explained weed was still illegal here, so asked if he'd sign it for my stoner mate, so he gave it the Dubs seal of approval by signing 'legalise it'.

And he sent some stickers, woop woop

What a dude, rad, sick, fully stoked etc.

  • I’ve got some Indy hollow 139s for sale if anyones interested? I had them on a 8” and they were just the right size.

  • I've gone and brought myself a cruiser (board and wheels) as my BiL is going to try and get firstborn (almost 4) into skateboarding. He's already made up a couple of paw patrol decks for him. I've never skated, so I'm going to give myself 6mths to get comfortable on it (I'm only getting it so I can follow along with him/them to the skatepark, and show solidarity)
I'm after some reverse kingpin trucks (as advised by BiL) and was wondering if anyone had any, and if not, if there were any forums I could have a look at to see if I could get some for small beer, I'd prefer to buy some secondhand rather than new (repair/reuse/recycle and all that)
    Let me know

  • How big is the deck?

  • What deck / wheels did you get? I recently built up a Lush cruiser with Paris 150s and it rides like a dream, have the 180s on a dropthrough too - turn really nicely but still feel stable with the standard bushings, so you could do worse than have a look at those.

These are new but are as cheap as s/h ones tend to go for, this seller (Sean Goff of 80's skate lore) has been clearing some out

    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PARIS-TRUCK-CO-V2-Skateboard-Trucks-Raw-150s-8-5-Wide-Axles-Set-of-2-/224805549570?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l6249&mkrid=710-127635-2958-0

*Edit - just seen your deck is pretty wide, might be better with 170/180s but maybe someone has run a setup like this

  • Ok. I have some slalom trucks that are nice and turny, but'll be too narrow to that deck.

  • @mcJ78 @606

Got some shark wheels (saw them ages ago in some video and thought if I ever get into skating, I'm getting some of them) these

    https://www.skatehut.co.uk/shark-wheel-california-roll-longboard-wheels-60mm-78a-clear-blue.htm

I've been googling, deck width and truck length, and it seems trucks from 150-180mm could work on it depending on which site you look at, but I'm probably looking at 180s

  • Great deck! I haven’t been in the market for skate stuff for a long time so when you said ‘cruiser’ I assumed it was going to be a chopped down longboard, maybe cambered with a pintail or swallowtail, but not that. I look at that AH deck and it says ‘vert skating’ to me.
So, if you were to get regular wide trucks and use wedged risers, you’ll get all the turn you need and clearance for big wheels (and later you can de-wedge and convert it for skating transition with smaller/harder wheels). Go onnn, do iiit.

Edit: 60mm wheels. Yeah. Regular trucks with some positive wedge for turns. I dunno whether the reverse kingpin trucks are still as high as they were back when it was a choice between a Randal 150 or a Randal 180, but I think keeping the board as low as possible is worth doing.

  • I was also going to say regular trucks + wedged risers. I’m thinking of building up something cruise-ey and happen to have some wedge risers and ricta clouds in my skating parts bin.

  • Nice - I used to think those wheels were a bit of a gimmick, but then read a couple of really positive reviews & seen videos of them rolling over gravel and was immediately shark wheel curious

Haven't ever used angled risers with regular trucks but sounds like that might be an option on your setup & give you some options further down the line once you start hitting vert half pipes

  • I’ve been really impressed with the Mini Logo trucks I just started skating. Coming from skating Indys mainly, I’ve found them surprisingly nice to skate. Good build quality, light, cheap. They do a 8.75” size, which according to them is for 8.5” decks up. Don’t know if that’s wide enough

  • @vilms5000 you make a good case, the only issue is I’m not looking to get into any sort of trick skating, once I learn to cruise around.
Fear of breaking bones/injuring myself is what’s tempering that route for me.
But will have a think about it. BiL is round today so might have a play with his board and trucks and see..

  • No tricks, just 'moves'!
Cruising around at a skate park might include rolling around a bowl. Carving (and not lifting your front truck to do anything other than get the nose over the coping as you exit...) is a valid reason to be at a park : )

Up thread are lots of truck recommendations. The Indy 169 is the go-to for a deck like yours. But I'd look into cheaper Indy knock offs. Truck turniness is about the way the truck is set up (bushings, risers, placement), sure, but start with the truck geo.

Lastly, for me, the key to a stable ride that turns and can be pumped on the flat (I use a sub-10" double kick, Indy 169s, 78a wheels) is the distance between the trucks. Measured from the inner edge of the truck baseplates, I like the 16.5 inches of trad vert decks, anything shorter feels squirrelly*. I'm 6' 3", so this is a factor, your mileage may vary!

Edit: *I run my trucks loose.

  • Thanks for the advice, much appreciated.
Last paragraph is just words to me. Makes me feel similar to when I first started on the forum and was asking about components to build my first frame. So much to learn and get my head round..

  • But I'd look into cheaper Indy knock offs.

This makes sense if you're just looking to cruise around. Anything the same width as the 169's and you're good

  • Got a wheels/bearings technical question:
I always use spacers in between bearing, and washers (‘speed rings’!). I don’t really like having any slop, so I want to be able to tighten the axle nuts up and everything still spin nicely. I sometimes find, like with my setup at the moment, that 3 of the wheels will spin fine and one will feel like it’s binding just a little, so I have to loosen the nut off a bit.

What’s it binding on? I’ve tried swapping wheels around and it won’t make a difference to the position that binds - ie. It’s not the wheel or bearings, it’s that particular side of the truck.

Completely inconsequential of course, but it irritates me that I can’t troubleshoot it.

  • Feels like it’s verging on @gbj_tester territory BUT, I understand that 608 bearings on an imperial axle is a reason for this. You can shim the axle, or get it replaced with 8mm steel. And while you’re burning cash get the locknuts and hanger ends faced so that you don’t need washers?

Citation: I have a set of giant slalom trucks (based around an Indy 109 front and a 3dm split axle rear) - 8mm axles, everything faced, smooth fitting and running, it’s just the idiot driving that’s the cause of slop now : )

  • Biltin bearings were proposed as a solution to the problem c.2000 and they're still being made/sold:

    https://offsetskatesupply.co.uk/product/biltin-bearings/

    Partial solution maaaybe.

  • The metric/imperial mismatch would presumably just make the bearing centres not quite as tight on the axles, which might make the wheel rattle slightly, but not sure it would introduce any sideways slop? I'm thinking that truck-washer-bearing-spacer-bearing-washer-nut should be able to be tightened down, without putting any sideways pressure on the bearings, as long as flange inside the wheel <spacer width.

I think I should try doubling up the washers on the truck-side of the wheel, to eliminate any interference from the truck, then the same with the bolt-side.

Those bearings seem like a good idea, but only really eliminate the need for spacers, which I have.

  • Yes, you're right, you should be able to tighten it all down. 8mm axles makes the overall fit 'better' because y-axis movement is massively reduced (which could -COULD- mean some twist?).

Hey, maybe one of your truck hanger ends isn't quite square to the axle?
