I have some aluminium tubing left over from when I made mine. £8. Much better than ski pole, will never snap. You would have to wait til I get back at start of October though. Also have one more length if any other new player needs some shaft material?

Anyone have a cheap back wheel going? Looking for fixed, 700c and not worried about braking surface. Cheap is good, but pref something not too retro...
No one? Silver would be good. Want to try and get my Sun Wasp on the road for the tweed ride :)

IF I ever got paid and got to do the first thing on my list of bike priorities, ie, upgrade my polo bike then you could have my Campag flip-flop wheel from that but as it looks like I am never getting paid I can't help :(
As for the Tweed Ride, I would wait and see if it happens. Despite my warnings, the organisers have rubbed the Tweed Run up the wrong way so...

Ah right. Maybe I won't hold my hopes up for the tweed ride. Saves me looking for suitable attire! :)

I have a mavic ma2 laced to a miche hub that you could have but it's missing a spoke and the axle, so you'd have to source a new one.
might be more hassle than it's worth, might not..

Hmn, might be a bit of hassle. Thanks though :)

Tom, have you got a 105 8sp mech? I think Jess is after one, if she can't get hers repaired.
-
• #2318
No unfortunately - It's all off a 6 speed gruppo

There is no such thing as an 8 speed mech. Any mech will work, derailieurs are not indexed, the shifter is.
Some of the new 10 speed stuff may use thinner cogs but I wouldnt know about that.

Doesn't it depend on the travel between the stops? i.e. you won't have enough travel to select all gears on a gear cluster with lots of gears if you only have a derailleur made for fewer gears even with both the stops at their max
(I've just changed my gear setup but still dont understand it fully)

There is only short cage and long cage. The former is limited to small range road cassettes, while the latter can work with large range mtb/touring cassettes AND small range road cassettes.
The distance of lateral travel is the same on all of them, basically the span of the freehub.

i don't think that's true mate, surely the travel of the derailleur is limited in some way or another. also bear in mind that the cable-pull ratio varies between different generations of derailleur so although the shifters provide the indexing they cannot control the amount of cable pulled alone.

8, 9, 10 & 11 speed cassettes are all the same width. The individual sprockets are just closer together (and maybe thinner).

Thanks for the info folks. Is there not a difference between MTB (135mm) and Road (130mm) or is that just axle spacing and nothing to do with cassette width (which I know are obviously not 130 or 135mm wide). What I mean is, I have an 8sp Shimano Altus rear mech, and the bike in question has a busted 105 mech and is a road bike (with old 105 groupset on it). Not sure if the altus is long or short cage, but I'd say long...
wanted : gas pipe or similar for polo mallet. thanks guys
