  • You can get indexed 9 Speed dura ace downtube shifters new - but there not cheap (£45ish)

Shimano indexed 8 speed ones are £21 new on ribble - Not many 8 speed indexed ones crop up second hand, i was looking for some for a while but didn't have much luck.

an 8 speed set up would probably be cheaper to get bits for

  • Are those the R400s on Ribble?

  • How many bolts/what size?

5 bolt, not really fussed about the size

  • I have in my box of shite 2 x brake/gear 8 Speed Shitmano combis suitable for drop bars, foc, any good? Think there is a mech lurking as well in there.

    2nd dibs.

If you dont want the combi shifter levers MG, Ill have them and you can have my shimano 600 downtube shifters (better than 105 or deore).

I've Got a 5 bolt one that was too small to fit my cranks, I'll bring it along on wednesday...

  • Thanks N3il

also on the lookout for a 700c 32h rim if anyone out there has anything suitable for polo

  • Front or rear? Gah... rim, not wheel!

    #facepalm

  • Thanks N3il

I don't have any 700c rims kicking about, but these have been recommended for polo use:

But Dan might be able to recommend something cheaper/stronger/better value.

  • neil I have some neatsfoot oil for your saddle if you wanna pop round?I ahve your light too. Andy I have my old wheel, u want it? I have those straps too.

  • Ok, might pop over in half an hour or so, I need to go to town so i can go the extra long way.

  • Those London types use Sputniks because they are (kind of) available in 48h. From what I know, they are not great quality, it's just the number of spokes which make them strong.

If you are limited to 700c and 32h, look for a deep-v rim, which will allow you to build to a higher spoke tension. Welded rims are stronger than pinned ones, but they cost a lot more too.

Brilliant. Can do swapsies on Weds eve or Thurs daytime? Lovely to see you t'other day!

You might be able to get a rim from Varno on the cheap, think he's pretty local too (if you have access to a car).

  • I reckon you wouldnt bend one of my wheelsets...

40mm rim crossed pattern on any hub??

I fancy doing some more with the polo guys so if anyone fancies tyring one out let me know..

  • varno have you still got the white rear deep v?

  • Yep....

varno have you still got the white rear deep v?

  • OK i'll have a think, how much do you want for it again. The other wheels look great too cheers

    Famous last words.

I've put a 1cm buckle in a 48h wheel built with tandem/downhill spokes playing stupid polo. I've seen pretty much any type of wheel buckled and loads tacoed and I've seen a solid, 10mm axle broken at both ends. Polo is hard on wheels.

Sponsor a Birmingham team and see!

  • Well ive had more eloquent requests for sponsorship in the past!!!

Anyway i would be interested in some involvement after some testing as i wouldnt want to supply anything that wouldnt be effective enough.

  • 4ndy, EMM and StuF would make good testers, as they've all knackered wheels in the last few months.

  • cheers for the feedback everyone!

@varno my main issue is that i need to build the wheel with 135mm spacing at the rear.
could i supply the hub to be built up? or do you do any with this spacing?

  • I thought your hub was okay? Proper 135mm singlespeed hubs are few and far between. I have a Surly one on my commuter, which has nice wide-set flanges, but it's £70rrp...
