  • I want to get a tattoo (http://www.londonfgss.com/thread14016.html#post422470) and as I'm off to NYC over xmas, figured I might get it done there.

Anybody know any good places to go?

Or good places in London if I got it done when I get back?

  • why not just get it done somewhere in london?
    somewhere you know is good.
not some random shit hole in nyc, just cos it's in nyc.

  • I'm torn really. I'm thinking it may be better to get it done in London, but wanted to get other people's thoughts.

Same question applies to London then. Anybody recommend a place in London? I've heard 'A Family Business' is good...

  • New Wave tattoo. Amazing. Long waiting lists though.

  • http://www.into-you.co.uk/ - all of them are good. Except maybe Calipso, but she is getting better.

This fella in New York is awesome! : http://www.bertkrak.com/tattoos/

    As is http://thomashooper.wordpress.com/ -

  • Depends what kind of ink you want - it's just like a bike shop, some specialise in single-speed, some on mountain bikes, some on road racers. It's a bad call to go to an artist known for oldschool colour work if you want a black and white portrait.

What kind of stuff are you after?

Edit - sorry, that's my standard reply to anyone who asks me about my tattoos, just read your post. :D

Do you want it to look thick and colourful? Seems to me that that sort of thing would look good in an oldschool kind of thick needle sort of dealy.

I'd back up White Flower for Into You (I'm getting my chestpiece done there by Duncan X, great artist tho' wouldn't work with your design) - one of the most consistently respected and well-rounded shops in the country.

I'd also say that JJ at Blood Brothers in Holloway would do a good job of that kind of design, since he has a good grasp of subtle colouration. Valerie Vargas at Frith St is doing some incredible work right now too, I think she'd do a good interpretation. Will add more as I think of them.

Don't WHATEVER you do design it yourself tho'. Basis of all bad tattoos, that. If you're getting custom work, let the artist do custom work.

  • +1 for tom hooper

Go see Thomas he's based in NYC now at a shop called "New York Adorned"

You can see examples of his work on that site, or if you go into frith street his old portfolio is still there

I'm after black and grey family crest (like below). So I figure I'm looking for somebody who can do nice text and maybe ornate religious style work maybe?

Aye although good luck getting an appointment.

Plus if you are not there for that long and you want continuing work, it'll be a bit of a nightmare. If you live in London, get work done in London. Blood brothers and the Family business are also good.

If you want a one off, old school beauty, the Bert Krak is your man!

If you just want black and white, it might - contrary to what I was saying previously - be worth talking to Mr X at into you - his lettering is so perfectly clean and black, it's astonishing. Best thing to do is head down there and check through their books.

  • Looking at the pic you posted I'd say Duncan X from Into you. His waiting list is not that bad. Also Lucy pyror loves doing religious work, she's done loads of my stuff. I'd highly recomend anyone at into you, I was lucky enough to have my sleeve done by the Late Jason Saga.

Lucy did my Mary, she has a long waiting list though now. Waiting to get my sleeve finished off by her in January.

I start my ribs with Duncan next year as well. Ouch.

I feel your pain - he's doing my chest in January. Ouch ouch.

  • Ribs is a killer, I have a 9hourer!

Tom Hooper, Victoria Elwood and Yoni at New York Adorned

    ALL ace

Thomas is now respected as one of the top 5 tattooists in the world, for his style anyway

Got no chance of getting an appointment with any of them over Christmas though

Are you jesus juice from the skin deep forum? If so, I'm "any channy?" on there

I'll have a word, pm if you need an appointment sorted out while your over in nyc

    Ooof!

Got an Elvis portrait done back in Gods country (Sunderland) in April on my right hand ribs. I think its 4 sessions of 4 ;(

  • Thanks for all the input and names.

The other tat I've been contemplating is an all black Fleur de Lis in the style of a playing card suit. About the size of a playing card. Maybe that would be better for a first timer? Shouldn't take long. Not much detail. Done in one sitting.

  • If it's your first time you should go all out. My first (and only to date) tattoo was a half sleave, 3 hours of line work for the first sitting and 5 hours of shading for the second.

  • I've just had the first outlining done today for my full sleeve, 3 hours so far, another 6 of outlines and then 30 of shading/colouring.

I'm getting it done at sacred arts in Stoke Newington, great artwork by James, he's put a lot of his own time into working up the piece i was after, and it's gonna be fucking sweet.

  • If it's your first time you should go all out.

Absolutely agreed. Sounds weird but it's the best advice.

  • yep, today was my first ink, and i've gone for a monster piece! fuck it, why not!
