First post.
People bombing around London without brakes and rocking backwards and forwards at lights confused the hell out of me. Then, my 21-gear Dawes Godknowswhatitwascalled got nicked and, at the bike shop, I saw a Pista and had the sales guy explain - badly - the concept behind riding fixed. That scared the bejaysus out of me, so I got a Konda Paddywagon and spent six months building up the courage to lose the freewheel.
As an aside, I eavesdropped on you guys a lot, both in the six month build up to taking the plunge and during the months since. None of my gang - think The Sharks, but camper - ride fixed and people here have been invaluable in guiding me through the learning process. (Even if they were't aware that they were doing it at the time).
If it's any consolation, that was almost as boring to write as it will be to read.

I remember having a chat with a guy on a carbon racer who used to do the same route as me, and he asked me what the attraction was of riding fixed.
I was a bit out of breath so instead of telling him 'well it's how I get from A to B, that's it', I started on the 'oh you know it's low maintenance' blah, at which point he rather sneeringly pointed out that his 18 speed DA equipped lightweight was also low maintenance - he actually snapped at me which was a bit weird, like he had been looking for something to have a go at me about.
Well I left it at that, relaxed as he accelerated, and followed him at a safe distance for the next few miles.
I should've said 'yeah but no but yeah but my bike cost a fifth of yours and I couldn't therefore afford a nice bike like his'. The strange irony being that now one could buy a fixed for more than what his bike cost! (in reference to edscoble's post about it now being an expensive habit)
Sorry, pointless rambling tale, but the whole scene was quite weird. -

Recovering fitness after a bad illness, boredom with motorbikes, sense of achievement after a hard ride.
Now it's just about getting looked at and confusing motorists at traffic lights.
But I can't remember how I originally heard about it, so I'm thinking divine inspiration. -

I spent too much time in my younger days listening to "Just One Fix" by Ministry.
I disagreed with the "just one" part and proceeded to ride many.Disclaimer: This post may or may not resemble a truthful or potentially untruthful remark from the possible author.
