  • to totally leave out the bloke who got 4 stage wins in one tour (especially since he left early) is well out of order, not even a mention
    +1

Not sure what Wiggo was on about either - thought he could've big upped Cav when he had a chance. I wonder if Cav declined the invite or whether he was snubbed?

  • Hamilton simply hasn't earnt it yet, nor Becky Adlington.....Hoy stands out as a true champ after 12 long slogging years at it. what about Bobby charlton tho.....I've still got a tear in my ear.

Edit - TDF just doesnt register here, even when it starts in the UK! Cav will have his moment tho.

    Vicky was on form.

  • "Chris Hoy thinks that the day Chris Hoy refers to Chris Hoy in the third person is the day that Chris Hoy disappears up his own arse."

  • Well done, Chris. The right choice. Well done all those who voted for him!

  • i wanted hoy to get it but had my money on hamilton. i reckon most of the public would have voted for hamilton.

I think it is pretty clear that they didn't :P

  • yeah, to totally leave out the bloke who got 4 stage wins in one tour (especially since he left early) is well out of order, not even a mention, even though he was on the montage breifly, I hope he blitzes in 09 and gets some payback.

They did mention Cav though? they said he set a new British Record, 4 stage wins, outstanding acheivement etc

  • Ainslie should have got it really though shouldnt he?

  • Yeah, he had a brilliant season on Ready Steady Cook

  • They did mention Cav though? they said he set a new British Record, 4 stage wins, outstanding acheivement etc

    I missed that bit then!

  • shame he couldn't race yesterday! the conditions are only the same as what any other road at this time of year are like but i suppose he's worth more than my minimum wage! ha!

  • Another one with typical British defeatist attitude who thought the public would be all behind Hamilton.

Glad they weren't well done the Hoy.

  • only just found out... whoo nice one! cycling is amazing, officially!

  • cyclist with a personality?

    whatever next?

  • The full results show that cyclists carefully did not split their vote - how otherwise could the ghastly Andrew Murray have beaten Wiggins.

    From Cycling Weekly

    1st Chris Hoy (cycling) 283,630
    2nd Lewis Hamilton (Formula 1) 163,864
    3rd Rebecca Adlington (swimming) 145,924
    4th Ben Ainslie (sailing) 35,472
    5th Joe Calzaghe (boxing) 34,077
    6th Andy Murray (tennis) 19,415
    7th Nicole Cooke (cycling) 18,256
    8th Christine Ohuruogu (athletics) 7,677
    9th Bradley Wiggins (cycling) 5,633
    10th Rebecca Romero (cycling) 4,526

  • cyclist with a personality?

he is a track cyclist though, and a sprinter to boot.

much less time on the saddle than most riders, it's that what makes them such intolerable dullards

  • I thought Nicole Cooke should've won. And some bloke in the Guardian agrees.

  • Next year everybody vote for the amazing Nicole Cooke. But yes, it's good the cycling vote wasn't too split, even though it hurts to see her on only 18,000 votes.

  • Deserved win for Hoy.

  • He's a monster of a rider, so thoroughly deserved.

Now someone take plaster cast of those thighs! Would make a great ornament!

All things considered 18,000 votes for her is pretty good.. That's only 1,000 behind Andy Murray and whilst she's achieved more than him, many many thousands more people know who Andy Murray is

I agree with both you and Matt Seaton. Nicole Cooke is by far the best. I explain Chris Hoy's greater prominence by gender (sport is still so unbalanced, even in tennis), a greater gift for publicity, those eye-catching three golds in one go (people/the media look for momentary extremes rather than consistent track records), but also (and this is the only one that I can really agree with) greater length of service. He's been training and racing track since the early 90s, and Nicole Cooke is a young whippersnapper compared to him.

    True dat.

  • No offense to Mr Seaton, but what a crock of shit this statement is:

"Any serious cyclist will tell you: being the Olympic road race champ and winning the Worlds in the same year trumps anything. I solemnly bet you that Lance Armstrong would give up one of his Tours de France to have the Cooke double among his palmares"

Comparing stage races to Grand Tours? I would guarantee Mr Armstrong would rather keep all his TDF's.

  • Mm, i'm sure lance would rather only be 6 times TDF winner, eh?

What do you mean by "comparing stage races to Grand Tours"? Seaton is talking about the Olympic road race/World Championship road race double in one year. These are the two most prestigious non-Classic one-day (non-stage) races in the calendar. Of course, guessing at Armstrong's mind gets Seaton nowhere but I don't find the thought implausible.
