I got a forge recirculating one but was very quiet....
I won't be getting one of those then!🔊
I got a check engine light yesterday on the way home from the supermarket, was gutted. By the time I was turning into my street it had turned itself off! I was obvs very relieved but... I should still take it to my mechanic to see what fault codes he can pull up, right?

My Impreza threw so many CEL I got a code reader.... Way back then it was a dash unit called Secs. Lots of OBD2 readers about nowadays I think.

Looking this up, and thinking that is a serious design fuck up.
Might be something to do sooner rather than later, if the design is that bad. -

It's one of those things that more common the higher the revs you sit at. Due to the balance shafts spinning at 2x the engine speed. I think they're rated for 14k rpm so unless you're redlining it everywhere at over 7k rpm then the chances of knackering them is fairly slim. But, that being said, I may do it in a year or so. Cam followers is my priority big change ATM (along with a thorough injector service) as the car is on 96k miles and the service history, though annual, does not mention those being done.

Nothing slips past you.

Isn’t the cam follower just the one in the mechanical fuel pump that you upgrade?

Yes, you're right, I think

took my car in to the VW specialist a month or so ago to have the timing chain tensioner swapped out. it had a minor oil leak at that time (noted on the prev MOT and picked up by the mechanic at the specialist). they said they thought it was coming from the upper timing chain cover and claimed to have fixed it after putting new tensioner in.
noticed yesterday (don’t use my car much) that there is some oil spotting where it was parked. I know you can have oil leaks if the lower timing chain cover is not swapped out when doing the tensioner on the MK6 golf. they had planned to do that when doing the tensioner but the part was on back order so skipped it. but they did say they managed to get the old cover off and back on again with no issues.
what are the chances they’ll fix it gratis if it does turn out to be the lower cover causing the issue. expecting low-to-nil but I’ll phone them on monday

In other old car news, I've been a bit miffed at the lack of cup holders in the STi. I started looking for alternative solutions online and then did a facepalm, they've been there all along!! (NB not my pic)

If engine light isn't on, clear the codes and see if they come back.
Is there a way to reset the cars control units such as leaving the battery disconnected.

There was a nice clio v6 in the tent if you’d gone for a wander.

Do we think that VW camper (and analogues) are going to maintain their values in the near to mid term?
-

A couple of years ago I'd have said no, as I assumed it was a covid fad. But I think they're solidly locked in as a status symbol now.
I think emissions will be the thing that kills a lot of them off.

My opinions, not backed by facts:
Aircooled VW campers have their own bonkers market niche. Older mortgage-free people with surplus unspent money because of Covid paid stupid money for campervan dreaming. They had to have an old VW because they're cool and Jamie Oliver has one. But they hardly use them. If lots of them want to sell maybe the bubble will burst.
ULEZ hurt the value of non-compliant diesel campers. Many campers in Europe are in this category. Prices for compliant diesels and the few petrol ones went up. Japan has some used petrol ones. They're worth a lot more here than there.
Electric or hybrid campers are rare and expensive. Heavy electric campers have a short range. Values of ULEZ-compliant diesel and petrol ones will stay high. It will be a few years before they're hurt by the move to electric.

Jamie Oliver has a quite rare early one. A safari I think.

Depends on the van massively. The right ones at the right money have never really done much depreciating. Stick to VW, Westfalia, Reimo, Danbury, Bilbo's etc. and you'll probably do alright. Ex-builders vans with big miles and homebrew conversions are best avoided. The more classic stuff has definitely taken a hit recently, but it can be hard to judge as condition varies a lot. They can also swallow money very easily in upkeep. I speak from experience...
Tring to remember as its a while since I had my Impreza but a BOV that vents to atmosphere loses air that the Ecu has seen so fuelling goes off Iirc. I got a forge recirculating one but was very quiet....
