  • Their wealth is inherited in the form of huge tracts of agricultural land and a struggling hotel business. Both businesses are in bad shape and requiring significant investment to make profitable. Any surplus cash is going straight back into those operations to try to make them profitable.

Sure, you can sell assets to raise some funds but people tend to be aversed to doing that if their wealth was built up over generations...people tend to feel that they are stealing from their grandchildren if they do that.

They have options and they will hopefully be in a better financial position in a few years but at the moment, the income from home made jams and condiments pays the food bills.

  • Sell the assets. Stick the money in the bank for the grandkids. Live off the interest. Keep making the jams for fun. Tell them I only need a 5% cut for that advice.

  • As I said, they have options. All sorts of emotional ties have to be taken into account when you're dealing with assets that your ancestors gave you though.

They choose to be in their current position.

They have an Airbnb place actually. No nice cars that I know of though.

  • I remember talking to a German guy with a castle and a divorce. As the first born male he saw the maintaining the ancestral family home as a responsibility for future generations. Unfortunately his net assets were going to leave him with a pretty stinging divorce settlement which ate up most of his wealth (bar the castle obvs).

Ultimately it was hard to feel that bad for him as a) he still had a castle, and b) his employment income was still pretty enviable - so the reality was a few years of debt, followed by a few more of a normal living standard.

  • Now that is what I am thinking.

  • How did they weld the aluminium?

  • I assume by Gas welding he means oxyacetylene

Gartrac Gas weld all their aluminium fuel tanks, oil tanks and even the Escort group 4 arches, with no filler rod

  • Was wondering the gas used, as gas welding aluminium, thin or otherwise, with gas is close to magic IMO.

AC tig makes it very easier, to the point I can do it.

  • Just oxyacetylene and skills, that's it.

  • Does anyone have a second car that would benefit from living inside on a charger whilst not in use?

It's a bit rich for my blood on my own, but if there's a few of us I think this would be a good idea.

And of course, nothing bad could come from me having much more storage for cars that may not run.

  • Always had a soft spot for these, spotted this morning, a mint condition Peugeot 505 gti.

  • I assume by Gas welding he means oxyacetylene

Gartrac Gas weld all their aluminium fuel tanks, oil tanks and even the Escort group 4 arches, with no filler rod

I did indeed, although Competition Fabrication used a thin strip of the aluminium they were using to make the bodywork as filler rod.

  • My mk5 golf is making some ridiculous thunder-like sounds on the LHS when driving at low speeds; not just when I brake. I can't seem to diagnose it on google. Will drop it by a garage asap but any ideas at all what it could be? Cheers

  • Stone between the caliper and disc?

  • On this thread there is much 505 love.

Is this and 205 the best that modern peugeot have created?

  • It is a real skill too.

Part of me thinks that ac tig is just easier and you don't have explosive gases sitting about.

  • Could be a wheel bearing. LHS typically goes first as it gets more load from going round roundabouts.

  • Check the wheel bolts, or a stone in the wheel trim.

Push and pul the tyre at the top and them 3 and 9 (side to side) and see how much wiggle there is.

  • Semi related: have enabled saved search criteria for 306 GTI-6s on local selling sites.

  • That's epic. Can completely see that as a lock up for a gang of thieves in a London based heist film.

  • From dealing with arches before, won't have 24 hour access, too near residential that will complain and they will complain about a sparrow fart and opening and closing shutters. Even tho there are trains operating noisily. Trying to think if that is network rail or LU. Neither want car repairs or vehicle storage as they have been trying to alter the image of business working in arches.

Looked in to this for me.

  • Looks cool, I suspect that engine might be a bit wee for that size of car- might need FI.

  • @umop3pisdn will take a closer look asap tomorrow! Got home in the dark and rain after work haha

  • @danb @lynx
okay sweet cheers both. If it is a wheel bearing is that an expensive job? Quick google expecting £100-200
