  • What do the previous MOT's say?

  • @Dammit not sure, need to have a look on Saturday when I'm meant to get it!
@mcmyk that's what it failed on but its now been welded and passed.
@ricky2slicky I think it was the seatbelt mounting. I'm going to google if this was an issue with the mk5s

Cheers all. Would feel bad pulling out of the deal but it does seem a bit odd that this is necessary as the car bodywork looked really clean

  • If you have the registration number then you can look up old MOT's online, it's a useful way of checking the history of a car - I'd expect to see comments about rust in previous MOT's if it's now bad enough to require welding for e.g.

  • that is so useful, thanks very much. No mention of rust on any of its previous advisories.
    Failed on:
-Nearside Seat belt anchorage prescribed area strength or continuity significantly reduced sill
-Headlamp aim so that beam "kick up" is not visible on the screen both (they've restored the headlights)
    Advisories:
-Nearside Front Shock absorbers light misting of oil or has limited damping effect
-Offside Front Shock absorbers light misting of oil or has limited damping effect
-Rear Service brake binding but not excessively

  • For £1030 still sounds like a decent deal to me

Maybe a problem with a door seal or similar that let water in to the seatbelt area? No other mention of rust implies it's a limited problem. See if you can have a chat with the tester and get his opinion?

  • Design of the rails drops the base of the seat between the rails, looks like theres some scope to go lower still:

  • I’ve dug out a 7/16” tap for you also

  • Good man. One second.

  • Hmm, having bandwidth issues.

  • I'll look for a bit of steel or order a bit.

    Do you need 2?

  • Two would be excellent - thanks!

I do wonder if the middle ring/shoulder would be better at a standard drill bit size, as that's the diameter of hole that will need to be drilled through the existing bracket.

Unless 22.5mm drill bits are cheap and ubiquitous, and I've just never looked properly?

  • I've got a 22mm drill at work, bizarrely

  • Ah, so a 22mm drill would make a 22.5mm hole?

Gaze in awe as I display my ignorance to the world.

  • well, it will be slightly oversize in my experience but i meant we could make the part 22mm to suit the 22mm drill i have to hand

  • Ah, that sounds sensible.

  • Ah, so a 22mm drill would make a 22.5mm hole?

what is the thickness off the plate you are drilling? Up to 3mm always use step drill.

  • I have a 6-30mm step drill too, maths would suggest it's a 3mm plate.

  • It’s 3mm, I think I measured it at 3.02

  • @el_presidente I agree. I rang then as you suggested, apparently no other advisories (advisories on the old one I mentioned were done by the previous owner) and the welding was done to the outside. Will send a picture of the welding when I pick it up tomorrow.
So no need to change the seals and it shouldn't happen again hopefully

    win win

  • Le Mans 24 is on now. First hour is brilliant.

  • Spotted at Duxford today
