  • Not sure if serious; however:

Testing whilst stationary won't tell you much because what you really want to know is how much you can hear above road / wind / engine noise.

You'll need a reasonably prominent upper frequently range that avoids being harsh and unpleasant. Female vocal, orchestral strings, acoustic guitar can test this well.

You'll want a punchy bass, dynamics arguably more important than getting very low frequency. Just pump some 90s techno for this.

    Then try radio 4.

  • A perfect circle: the package is a great track to test stereos. Good production, quiet bits, loud bits... Needs a system that can separate the elements to sound good.

Otherwise, just take music you know well and like. Who gives a fuck if if the stereo sounds great with music you'll never listen too.

  • This, the battery is likely dead by now. New Battery, no more hassle. Endless the car is not charging or there's a weird drain....

  • Holst's The Planets and Trance Nation?

  • Talk Talk - Spirit of Eden
    Steely Dan - Aja
    Brand New - Science Fiction
    Q-Tip - Kamaal the Abstract
James Blake - The colour in anything

All of those albums have strong production with nicely seperated tracks and plenty of range.

And obviously anything by the Spice Girls

  • Thanks, but I’m in E17 and the Leyton one I mentioned is about 15min walk away :)

  • Why not in the Merc? Funny proprietary sound system?

  • It's already got a sub - Harmon Kardon Logic7 system comes with one.

  • Limp Biscuit - Rolling

... I think or one of the other top hit tracks from that album. Lots of different levels plus effects from different directions.

  • Bizkit if you please

  • Couldn't drive the car as it was still partially disassembled, but the system does sound good - very clear, no distortion, but listening to Smack my bitch up back-to-back with the C55 does show that a sub fills in a significant section of the music which is missing in the Porsche.

Holsts Mars and Jupiter are about equal, and Radio 4 was much better than it was - trying to listen to the News Quiz with the roof down on B roads was quite hard before, but there's much more volume available now.

I dropped off the Porsche Bose-Subwoofer, more for them to see if it would fit than any expectation that it could be used as-is (it's a very small speaker for something that needs to output a low-frequency), as the shell might be able to be re-purposed (it goes in the passenger footwell).

I brought the Focal back with me, if anyone wants it please shout or it's going to sit on the shelf in the garage for the next five years.

  • Pink Floyd - Great gig in the sky
Fleetwood Mac - The Chain (obvs)

  • Anyone ever owned a caddy/kangoo/transit connect style panel van as an only car?

Have loved owning my clio trophy for the past 2 and a bit years but getting very tired of bikes on the roof and never actually driving it how it's meant to be driven, so looking at trading in for a small panel van. Obviously has to be euro 6 for ulez, not sure if I'd go kombi or just 2 seats, but would love to fully insulate the back and use it as an all round bike/camping/outdoor utility vehicle.

  • Had a high+long 2006 Connect. Inside was just about long enough for a double bed, bikes underneath. Not enough headroom left to insulate. The newer Connects are one "mid" height rather than having low and high. This class of van isn't big enough to be a 2 person camper without fitting a poptop.

    Now driving a 6m long H2L3 Boxer.

  • Not necessarily looking for a camper, just a general sports equipment carrier that i wouldn't freeze to death in if i ever rolled a sleeping bag out in the back.

Anyway, Renault offered to buy my trophy back for what i believe it's worth, so have a few days to mull over options.

They had a delivery mileage kangoo xl on the forecourt but it was too expensive for my budget, and they don't do approved used commercial.

  • Very keen on this!

  • A few more for testing sub response. 90s BMW 3 series optional.

  • You know there's a middle ground between a Clio and and Transit, right?

Unless you're actually going to use the extra space on a regular basis just get something which will take your bikes with the front wheels off. Then use a tent. A normal car has the advantage of having back seats if you want to go somewhere with mates.

  • I don't have mates...

Just kidding. Actually after fleshing it out with the missus, we're thinking of trying car free living for a few months. There are a lot of zipcar/zipvan's around us to avail of, and we've only put 7k miles on the clio in 26 months, 3k of which was three drives home to Ireland.

  • Ooh yeah. The 508 is not a bad looking thing either.

  • Arghh looks like the Peugeot has one too many and slept with a new Camaro. Love the original but that does nowt for me...

  • Wasn't the original a Pininfarina? I really don't like that...

  • Looks a lot like the Datsun IDX concept from a few years ago

  • Pug doesn't look right without the yellow lens lights.

Wasn't the ugly thing next to the pug being touted as the lancia 2000 coupe, or did I dream that?
