Cheers all. Will see what insurance have to say and go from there.

I just bought a 24mm front ARB for the Forester to go with 21mm on the rear.
The rear made a big difference but just left me feeling that the front rolled way too much.

But a horrible gearbox and woeful throttle mapping if it's anything like the ones I've driven recently.

2006-2012 Honda Civic 1.8 petrol
This seems the most realistic petrol option. They often have FSH and were popular with older folk. Iirc Honda have records of service history that you can check with them.
Unfortunately, Mr H has vitoed the Civic based on size and being too rude. I've found the biggest pain of for cars in that price bracket is location.
Spending £8k seems to open up all sort of good choices within easy reach. When you half that it's a mission. Especially in manual petrol.

Ha, too rude?
I feel like I should be taking Mrs Warboys to watch Song of Praise each time I get into mine.

I know!
It looks like we've narrowed our unsexy choices down to:
- Mazda3
- Hyundi i30
The Mazda3 is preferred as it just feels like a more solid car, although the boot isn't as practical. It is a fucker to find as they weren't that popular, and often not that cheap in good condition... I wonder if people just keep them(?). Other negative is the gear leaver feels like it has a long throw due to the position.
We got in a i30 that had done ~60k and had probably had kids in it and I was pretty impressed by the lack of wear and tear. Although we also saw this one

which had clearly done +100k and been clocked before each MOT. Which I was surprised to learn is now much easier with modern digital dashes than it used to be.Tbh I'm kinda coming back round to the Jazz as at least there are tonnes of cheap ones everywhere.

Has anyone driven a Focus 1.0l ecoboost?
Although I'm reluctant to buy an older Ford, there are some not too old 1.0 in my price range. After seeing what a modern VW 1.4 turbo can do I'm curious.

Ha! That’s the dealer I got my car from. Autoscout in Wokingham. Would buy from them again.
-
• #44567
Ha! Really?
They seemed ropey as fuck.

According to Auto Trader; Yes.

Sub-60k My search threw up a couple of mk4 and a Cat C, with the closest car to London being in Newbury.
Maybe I'm missing something but that doesn't seem to make it that viable an option.

Maybe I just got lucky. They gave me more than I thought they would on a px and the car's been a really good runner since. They are essentially selling old bangers though!

Out of curiosity what did you get?

Got an 'o9 Volvo V50 in January last year. The worst thing about it has been dealing with the approved Volvo dealer. I took it there right after I got it to get them to look it over and it came back excellent and then to do the next annual service, but they are extremely unresponsive in general and expensive, so I've given up on them for anything and use a local garage I like instead.

That matches my experience of a Volvo main dealer I'm afraid.

Thoughts on this fault:
Repair as soon as possible (minor defects):
Nearside Registration plate lamp inoperative in the case of multiple lamps or light sources (4.7.1 (b) (i))
Has one of the number plate lights gone and not been replaced?
Cheers.
2006-2012 Honda Civic 1.8 petrol
For that money you’ll get one in good nic, low mileage and good service history.
Mighty reliable, pretty good on fuel*, cavernous boot and a revy vtec engine.
I average 34-38mpg mixed driving
