What characteristics would an engine like that have?
I don't really know what kind of performance bike engines have but I'm guessing they don't have much torque seeing as they have such a high rev range and low weight?

it depends on what cams they run in the engine. but it would be similar to a f1 engine, small displacement, huge revs, multiple cams

Well, it's a car that Michael's supposed to like, so of course it has to be fugly. ;)

If you want speed, and you don't care about looks, this is what you need:

Those crazy Dutch, as far as I remember it uses a bunch of different Audi engines (not at the same time obviously) and there's a turbo version too, pretty brisk, but would you honestly be seen in one of those?! At least a Seven is a classic shape and thankfully they haven't ruined it (though have a look at the 4th series Lotus Seven, bloody ugly, least Caterham had the good judgement to go back to the S3).

Still, if they were gonna make another Christine-esque film, that IFR would be perfect =P
