it's lovely, though.

I've got to sell my RS4 for house extension fund in the next 6 months if thats of interest @Dammit
I'd rather like the sensible car to be an auto, but apart from that yes, always like the RS4.
I am aware that my desire for an auto to take away the pain of driving out of and into London makes me an old man.

Can understand that - I drove the c6 S6 recently. Very different car to mine but quite enjoyed it

It is rather. Of the 170-odd XF Shooting Brakes on Pistonheads that's the only petrol.

That E63 AMG is £16,000, just shy of 100,000 miles. Plenty of grunt, petrol so I'm not filling the lungs of toddlers with fine particulates, and should make an entertaining noise.
I mentioned the Panamera to my girlfriend and she made a bad face.
Why should I not buy the Merc?

Because old Tory councillors in Surrey are the most likely drivers

I had seen that on eBay. I bought my Volvo from Aberdeen, so there's a degree of tradition there.

Cos of the other one I posted above being only 4K more?
I don't know much about them TBH, but the newer shape looks much... newer..

That's going to be an issue with any of these cars though, although some are more Photocopier salesman than others of course.

Higher mileage, but yes, it is newer.
Fuck it, I'll buy a VW bus instead.

I'll sell you my 71 Westfalia for less than those Mercs if you like?
It hasn't got 400bhp tho. More like 60.
I secretly want an Elgrand Highway Star with the 3.5 V6 for family and bike adventures but have no room.

I quite like the idea of a camper, however I've also become used to having a bit of poke.
Would a VW bus be terrifying with a couple of hundred horsepower?
-
• #35116
No. It's been done loads, all the bits to make them steer and stop can be bought off the shelf.
-
• #35117
Mission creep. Hmm. Reckon they'd move on the price of that newer AMG?
-
• #35118
Pretty standard to put a scooby lump in the back of them innit? I think it's the N/A ej25 thats popular as oppose to the ej20 with or without a turbo.

Looks decent enough on the outside, but I never really liked that generation of interior. Never driven one though, just been in taxis, but it never seemed like a nice place to spend a day to me.

There is a guy who lives near me who has had several of these. I think the only reason he's on his third one in 2 years is because he is definitely the most OCD person I've ever met. I imagine a seagul shat on it, so he bought another not being able to live with the knowledge that a bird dump had briefly been on the paint.
Like it though, he has had the same exhaust on all three of them, and the latest one he's managed to get the newer RS6 style ASBO 'quattro' bumper lower section seamlessly merged into the rest, looks great, but main thing is the sound.
No idea what its like to drive, haven't been allowed to ride along, suspect to much dirt under my finger nails to be allowed passage to the interior. But the sound is incredible, borderline too loud just cruising about and it wails like nothing else I've heard before, but does not seem to bang and pop (annoying IMO).

Unless you need the diesel (get 1.9 150 manual only, auto is horrific), the 1.8 and 2.0 turbo petrols are GM saab's bread and butter, all have sludging and PCV issues but easy and cheaply kept on top of when you know that you have to. Have had several 2.0 and 2.3 turbo in the family and all been flawless (aside PCV clean out and keeping track with superseded parts every 40-60k). Had a modified 2.0 B205 that was running around 265bhp (230lb.ft on abbot racing parts + map done by either them or 2S) but on 65-70mph motorway cruise control would get mid to high 40's, with a record of 46.5mpg over a whole tank, normally put in between 34 and 36mpg though which I could thoroughly live with for the power/reliabilty/usability/very low cost of ownership of that engine. Had 170k on it before bulkead of car was too badly fatigued (so many cracks!!!) to be safely repaired.
2.3 can get into the 300/340bhp territory without interals AFAIK, but even in standard tune are significantly heavier on fuel no matter what you do to them. -

Always wanted a GTi6, theres a gold one that I see fairly regularly. I imagine at some point their value will jump up, can't be many left though now :?
-
• #35123
Thanks! Quite a few to choose from here so will bear your advice in mind.
-
• #35124
Yep, not many at all. Although I've done the wrong thing and bought a cheap one that needs work. But I'm hoping to keep it to essential stuff only and just drive the wheels off it. I think here in aus there's about 30 to 50 left. But the good ones are being kept forever. I looked at a few and this old red one "talked" to me and I liked the owners... I'm a sucker.
