  • Also in the string of boy racer questions. will 35mm lowering springs without a change of shock cause car to handle like shit and jump off the road killing me?

  • Nope. So long as you get the geometry done afterwards. Many kwik fits have a proper Hunter alignment machine and can do it for a couple of hundred quid.

If the car hasn't had it done for a while it will feel transformed.

  • I spent half an hour talking to Chris from Centre Gravity today, really thoroughly nice chap and extremely knowledgable about what to put under a 911.

  • And there goes another £3,000...

  • No quote, we just had a chat. A quote may of course arrive in time, but my current suspension is fine. I don't understand the window question, I didn't ask Chris about his fenestration.

  • Ah, ok.

  • Have your eyes wide open. Series XJs are lovely but I've never heard of an unrestored one that wasn't hiding catastrophic corrosion.
Series 2s are also the ugliest and least reliable, having been made in the darkest BL days with terrible component supplies. That sort of money would get you a newer, faster, lighter, more economical and reliable Aluminium XJ. I know which I'd rather have, despite it not looking as good.

  • Sensible advice is sensible. It does amaze me how you can pick up an early 70s Jag for so cheap, but like you say cheap for well known reasons. Personally I prefer the looks of series II to series III cars but much appreciated for the cold hard advice.

  • Er brakes need sorting looking at the MO, all the flexis and maybe more. I find some where that does the calipers exchange to get an idea of prices...

Gearbox cable isn't adjustable and setting it up correctly is a real pain in the arse requiring the gearbox to be dropped to gain access. Check for water in the gear oil and the box is fucked. As well as the radiator.

  • The last V6 petrol ones are lovely. 240bhp and 30mpg. I had a 2007 one and enjoyed it a lot.

  • XJR100 is the one to get ;)

  • Quite like the stripped look.

U branching into cars? Or snuff films? 😬

  • Does it matter for insurance purposes who owns the vehicle?

Just occurred to me that I've put the finance etc for new car in my name but old car and NCB etc is in Mrs CnR's name.

Will that matter when we transfer the insurance onto bee vehicle?

  • If you're married, the insurer probably won't care. Otherwise, cost of a postage stamp, previous keepers+1.

  • Yes, married.

Don't really want to immediately add another owner to a brand new car. Although I guess it won't really matter after 4 years.

  • The Transit Connect I naively bought in a hurry 21 months ago failed its MOT and needs over £800 of work to pass and sort out some annoying advisories, including replacing both outer sills, a rotten fuel line, both front ARB links and at least one ARB mount at the rear, a small oil leak and replacing the thermostat housing which had warped (only leaked coolant in winter, but having a known leak meant I didn't notice the fuel leak, and I've been driving sensibly enough not to notice a drop in economy...), and a knackered numberplate.

    Van's done 246k miles.

Garage have scheduled time on Thursday to knock the outer sills about and see what state the inner sills are in.

Was planning to replace it with a bigger van for proper DIY campering soon, but not yet. Done some ebay/autotrader/gumtree research around a £3k budget (target £4k including the interior).

Hard to go van shopping without a working vehicle. Thinking that given the shitty weather and the cost of train tickets, I'm better off fixing the Connect and selling it later than just scrapping it now, to reduce the risk of me buying another van that has hidden future headaches.

  • Next buyer will see the same surname and address on the V5C, it's the buyer after that who will have 3 prevs rather than 2.

  • Although the registered keeper of a vehicle is not necessarily the owner. The ownership of a car can change without the registered keeper changing, and vice versa.

  • Zero inquiries about my Volvo, looks like I'm holding onto it for now.

  • I had seen that, yes - thanks for mentioning it though. I'm still fixated on an auto V8 though.

  • But I absolutely can't have two estate cars, so the Volvo has to be sold before anything else happens.
