  • Are you ever tempted to do more of the work yourself?

You're pretty handy and have good ATD, so I would have thought lots of this would be right up your street.

Or is it time and space?

  • Or is it time and space?

I'm in Colorado, the car is in West Sussex, I don't have a 5,000 mile long spanner.

  • I thought you had a beard?

  • Yep thats my clutch and dual mass. 😂

  • I've been watching this guy recently, thinking of this thread...

  • While the clutch is off, are you going to change the IMS?

  • Nope, mine is the dual-row which doesn't tend to go wrong, it's the single row in the later engines that enjoys eating itself and therefore lunching the engine.

  • Garage seem perplexed as to why such a meaty gearbox is on my 2.0 TDI.

    Seems legit...

  • Probably not what BMW had in mind.

  • Did the camera confirm that?

Can we take bets now on replacement clutch and or flywheel seeing as we are there.

  • How much play is there in the dual mass?

  • FML:

"Looks as if we need to replace the clutch and fit the upgrades fork arm as yours is the original one still fitted.

Also the vario-cam solenoid is over to one side we will now need to remove the cam cover and replace the seals ETC."

  • Crikey.

  • I just come to this thread to feel better about the £3200 I paid for both head gaskets, clutch, timing belt, water pump, plugs, oil, coolant, two coil packs, lots of little gaskets, rear lateral links (STI alloy ones)and rear ARB links. @Dammit you're deep into serious man maths and I take my hat off to you. I really hope you get some trouble free motoring from this car soon.

  • Did we take bets?

What does the clutch look like?

  • Did I mention I'm 5,000 miles away from the car?

I presume it looks like a 62,000 mile 996 clutch. I knew it was around time for it to be replaced, that's why I asked them to split the engine and trans to take a look at it - would have been more annoying for them to stuff it all back in, then have to pull it all back out again in a month.

  • Dammit, I suggest you take advantage of some of the local product to blunt the sting a bit. Damn....

  • Yes you have, didn't the garage send photos on the clutch?

  • No, that was Ordinata's Audi.

  • Clutch is 80k miles (10 years) old.

  • I know, hence asking if they had sent a photo.
