First accident (in Cambridge?) he lost control of the car and hit a tree the engine and gear box ended up quite far away from the rest of the car.

"The car was quickly transported to McLaren for their assessment, and after four weeks the bill was in: £910,000. Fortunately, thanks to the astronomical rise in F1 values, repairing the car was a no-brainer for the insurance company."
Is it just me, or does this make no sense?

^^How gutting would that be as an owner...
-
• #33332
Wouldn't they otherwise have had to write it off and pay out full market value?
-
• #33333
Now you mention it, that should have been pretty obvious.

How do you create a price for something that is a great unknown?
-
• #33338
The car was originally bought for half a mill. Increase in value meant the car was worth alot more than the original purchase price.
Also finding the expertise to repair the car.

His went back to McLaren and I used to be in touch with the workshop manager that priced the job up most expensive car insurance job at the time, I think he had to sell it as no one would insure him after the repair as it was close to £1M
Who? Mr Bean? He kept it, then sold it a couple of years ago for £8m.

Have found most cars with projector bug eye style dipped beams are dizmisle and need the hid kits on them to show anything up. Mates vectra Sri had the worst lights I've ever seen on something that wasn't built in Soviet union, weren't great when new and when ten years old the silver lining goes off inside but because sealed you can't see that it's hanging off. Apparently they only last 2-4 years of normal use before peeling.
Would be interesting to know if newer cars have any better materials in the construction of the lamp -

Tho he was going through a divorce at the time.
-
• #33342
Yeah then (Nov2015 divorce car sold in June 2015), his wife divorced him around that time as he went off with a lady half his age. That was the supposed unreasonable ground for the divorce.

Spent all of today replacing my headgasket and few other gaskets around there and nearly all my running issues are solved, engine no longer overheats or even runs hot, heating works again, no water leak, no oil leak and no boost leaks! However my temp gauge has now stopped working :/

I've got the beginning of corrosion under my drivers side door striker plate- stainless steel and non-stainless not playing nicely together.
The fix for this is a rubber gasket, but first I need to get rid of the rot.
This is all fairly straightforward- but, right next to the striker plate is the VIN sticker.
Just get a new one you say- well.
From Porsche that sticker is £360.
For a sticker.
Is there a way of magically dissolving sticker adhesive in a way that doesn't harm the sticker, allowing re-use?

• #33345
That's supposed to be galvanised isn't it? Has your car been crashed?
-
• #33346
Nope, they all do it - the Boxters do it as well, unless they've had the gasket fitted.
Run your finger around the periphery of the striker plate, odd's on you'll feel the roughness if you don't have the gasket.

Hmm, I'll check mine. I wonder what year they put the gasket in.
That ^ looks like it'll be a localised smart repair, so you can probably just mask the sticker off. -

It's not going to hurt it. I service my cars every 5,000 miles/12 months, whichever comes sooner - oil change and so forth.
