Just got my vrs back from the mechanic. Tearing a hole in the sump doesn't appear to have ruined the engine or turbo, although he warned me to keep an ear/eye out for weird noises or unusual smoke for the next week or so. He reckons if the turbo does die it'll be circa £800 to sort out, which I think would be the end of the road for the old skoda...

Fingers crossed I pulled over quickly enough and it'll be alright.

Second hand turbo (in my experience) is ~£150. I went through a few before I bought a new one - for around £800, as it goes.
