Because occasionally, one of them is out of the country with the main car.

That something that haven't cross my mind, good point.
Does off street parking however still keep the insurance down as well?

Can you answer as to why they need a backup car?
I did, one of them is using the main car out of the country most of the years, leaving no car in the country.
It is second hand, and an 2012 Aygo can be had for £2,000 (2012+ is the model that's under 100g/km).

Fiat Panda twinair. Bigger than the Aygo, free everything, quick as sin due to hysterical turbo and two cylinder lawnmower engine. I have one and it's a hoot.

Pretty much, I said back-up because they used bicycle for most of the journey except for the usual longer than 10 miles trip.
@Bullheart excellent suggestion, the Fiat Panda is a very practical cars.

Why not get the full fat 2l or v6?
-
• #32045
Can find a good example for £250-500, even with a high mileage, and higher emission, it work out cheaper in the long run.

Meh. I've gone to Le Mans in the back of a 996.

If that's a 16v (or even if it's not) it's bloomin brilliant value. IMHO Caterhams handle best with a VX, much sweeter turn in than a K series.
I once had a go with a 1600 VX 16v in a kit car that made 190bhp at >8000rpm, it was a lovely, lovely little thing.

But look at the majestic length of the c-d pillar fenestration
They live in Surrey, they are getting rid of the people carrier to replace it with a car that have no vehicle tax (under 100g/km) and at least min 50mpg in petrol.
As in one main car (BMW) and one runabout.
A Toyota is suggested because of their positive experiences with it, we never had a Toyota that had a major problem, the only big job it received is getting the belt changed.
