I know I know. Guess I have to chalk it up to life lessons learnt the hard way

Never buy the insurance. If it was worth buying they wouldn't sell it.
Self insure all the things.

Don't over tighten it, make sure you have no tight spots going lock to lock, a bit extra freeplay in the straight ahead position is normal.
Measured at the steering wheel, 75mm for non rack and pinion
13mm for rack and pinion -

Depending on steering wheel diameter, surely?

Ha - your next trip is to Harbor Freight for a Sawzall. :)
Isn't that going to massively change the gearing?

For most things, I agree. But not for hire cars. They are cursed.
One time arrived at Pisa airport with wife and two small kids, put all the luggage in the boot, shut the boot, realised car key was in the boot and it had locked itself. Car hire office had no spare key and couldn't get one.
Located handy brick, stove in rear passenger window, opened door, released lock and retrieved key from boot. Back at car hire office explained that I needed another car as this one had a smashed window. Keys were swapped for next car.

Straight from the MOT manual, a bit of common sense added if someone has fitted a smaller than standard wheel then?

Not yet, currently on an extended trip but I'll be back!

Yeah it's racking pinion, not had a look at it yet though.

Sawzall? Blistersand aviation snips for now. It has changed the gearing a fair bit. When I've done wheels, tires and steering I'll pull the engine and box out to change some things. My mate asked me if I wanna race Baja 500 with him in 2018... I'd probably die but class 5-1600 looks fun.

Genius. Hand cramp much? Drive it up to Rowher OHV area just off the Sierra Highway out near Santa Clarita and see if you get up to the top of the mountain. It's only $5 for the adventure pass - it's a right laugh up there.
Baja is amazing, I'm going at least go and watch the race one of these days. There's loads of great desert racing in CA too, at least for bikes. Currently 50/50 on towing some bikes down to San Felipe for a piss about at xmas. Looks mega.

Yeah, I'm not paying that, but that someone had this idea is awesome.

No cramp yet just blisters and cuts everywhere, I went slightly more aggressive than I first planned to with the fender cut but mostly because I encountered so much fucking bondo that I couldn't be arsed to cut through. Also remembered I still had my last paycheck from work back home coming through so I decided to order a new exhaust system. Went for a larger bore tuck away header and single glasspack.
Rowher really isn't that far at all! If I can sort out my tune, lift and exhaust for more clearance I might try and get out there next weekend. What are your work hours like? Would be cool to meet up for a drink or something at some point.

AS everything else has gone silly prices I think it will make the grand. Only 99 were ever made.

Right - I had no idea. Couldn't see much to restore in those photos, other than the engine block.
I thought it might be a wind up.

I imagine that this would be a case of keeping the VIN and the matching numbers on engine/trans/etc, and basically building an entire body for it out of whatever you could find. Someone with amazing fabricating skills might take it on.

Most panels still available, if you know where to look ;)
Look how much old fords are going for, MK1 escorts mexicos and others. Look in how much can be made from faking lotus cortinas.
Thats madness, are you living out there now?
