  • @tommmmmmm

£3k will buy you an Civic EP Type R or will buy you a 2.2 diesel FD with around 100k miles. Just don't buy an FD with the semi automatic box, it was very jerky.

I'd say go for the EP Type R

  • What are they like to own and drive? I only ever read reports about suspension made of concrete and terrible performance, but then this was Australian motoring press.

On 16" wheels they drive and feel fine, comments heard on 17" wheels as harsh. With the aluminium chassis I don't think there is much give in it. Audi tuned the suspension carefully, different set ups for diesel, 1.6 and 1.4 and whether has sunroof or not. The engines are the same as across the VAG range so go aswell as those. The 1.6FSI seems to be plagued by problems (afaik it was VAGs first use of it). I have both petrol and diesel, the petrol is a joy, smooth, quiet and a relaxing drive 40mpg. The 75bhp diesel is noisey, even inside but with leather, AC 4x ewindows, heated seats and a webasto pre-heater and 55mpg usually gets driven away first. Getting quite a cult following here and Germany with very active forums. As a first car or small family hauler they do great. Rear seats fold flat and even remove completely in 3mins.

The story is that Audi lost thousands on each one they sold. They have more in common with the A6 than other models. Audi have never filled the A2 gap since 2005 when the last came out of the factory.

If buying one, extras are everything especially Open Sky and AC. The 75bhp diesels hold the prices best. The biggest problem of driving one is scared of being bumped, basically any bump and the insurance company will write it off, no one repairs all aluminium cars at insurance company rates.

  • ha. that you did. I thought they were ok, for the record.

why not buy her a £750 mk4 golf and keep the jerrymobile?

  • ^^ rikkifourcars

  • Hmm, I'd take a petrol... interestingly just searched on carsales in australia... the ONLY one for sale was a 2003 with 70,000 km... $21,000 AUD. Must be the only Audi that doesn't depreciate.

  • Or maybe a GT ;)

  • I do like them seem to be pricey for what they are. Didn't scully scrap one as he couldn't get a sunroof?

  • So this weekend is retromobile in/at Paris.

    Anyone going?

Good if you want a nice CX as there are a few for sale including a turbo estate. All part of the CITROENS OF THE ANDRÉ TRIGANO COLLECTION

  • Still don't know what ate that tyre though.

  • We're not allowed two cars apparently.

Insurance cost of the two would be a bit of a pain in the arse to be honest.

@NurseHolliday I do appreciate your suggestions. I'd love an E30.

But I think something with airbags and fewer dings would be good.

  • I do like them seem to be pricey for what they are. Didn't scully scrap one as he couldn't get a sunroof?

Really good money for high spec / low mileage. With no rust, no bubbles anywhere it's only ever the mechanics that need repair. The prices for those are similar to Polo if you keep away from TDI90 and 1.6FSI

Only one person in UK repairing sunroofs. A2 cars in MK

Never imported to Australia so either personal import or Dealer car

  • Shiny. I'm going to adopt the same policy on cars as I do with bicycles - I'm going to get some nice new shiny wheels by buying a new car. I've booked the Piglet in for a partial respray so I can sell it to my brother-in-law and free up some driveway space for the next set of wheels.

  • I think I'm going to take the car to a local garage and ask them to inspect the suspension, if they can't spot anything knackered I'll get them to do a four wheel alignment and hope like hell that that cures/exorcises whatever ate the tyre.

  • Then buy a 996.

  • Nurse is your man back from Germany yet?

  • don't fuck about - elite rainham

  • It has only been mentioned a few times, including comments such as avoid kwik fit.

With that kind of wear there should be a shiny bit, I'd firstly stick load in the back, at least two peoples worth and see what the tyres and suspension are doing. The rears on the 850 have an amount of passive rear steer as well as having some toe in as the rear suspension is adjustable...ish.

    Can you guys see those?

  • After some more googling:
http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=65148 shows replacing all the bushes in the rear suspension. In the first photo it shows the upper spring plate and I think the contact is either from there or the spring being out of place.

http://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=9402 this one shows just the end links being replaced.

  • Wheels look great.

  • That is a beautiful car, Neil... Would be such a shame to get rid of it...

  • Are you selling the Volvo?

  • neil - are you really selling? i might be interested.

  • They look fantastic
