My partner is learning to drive but doesn't really like the Mercedes. I'm loth to give it up but it might be better to get something a bit more fuel efficient and less bulky.
What's the least soul-destroying sensible hatchback for around £2-3k? I've had a look and a ten year old Golf GT TDI with 80k or so miles should be within budget.
Any other suggestions? I was leaning towards turbo diesels for a bit more fun plus fuel economy, but I could be persuaded otherwise.
Thoughts?

But if you wanted a genuine hassle free modern-ish hatchback, Civic

Interestingly, AutoTrader is littered with RX8s

True story, my rather thick ex-colleague told me that he had considered trading up from his Honda Jazz to an RX-8 but then decided not to as someone had told him it had 'a wanky engine'.

RX8's didn't come with a V10...

Cheers NH.
I think it will have to be a hatchback or at least something which looks, if not is, quite small.
Civic is a good shout but they're so soulless. Most hatchbacks would be soulless after a w201 but there's something especially depressing about pre-facelift and none-Type R Civics.
What's the most fun I could have for the money and within the other constraints?
Apparently RX-8s average about 20mpg. Fuck that.

Ooohp. Misfire!
Drop the x :oP

They might be soulless but they're surprisingly fun to drive and the interior is great.
If you plump for a small hatchback you're basically limiting yourself to a Golf (or variant), or a French hot hatch
