Did aus have Euro cars built as knock down kits? I know south africa did.

Not with those stupidly big alloy wheels.

If it's got stupidly big alloy wheels you probably won't be taking it off-road anyway.
-
• #26155
I know mg did.

I'm not of the "I'd rather push my Holden than drive a Ford" lot, but I am def on the Holden side at Bathurst.
I went to see an awesome care collection in Margaret River. It included a Cobra, a C2 Corvette, a 48k km bone stock A9X Torana, an E49 R/T Charger and a pair of GTHO Falcons - a Phase 3 and a (rare as fuck) Phase 4.
But, the highlight was a Competizione (alloy bodied) Daytona.
The best small car collection I have ever seen

Nice collection.

Yep, dude from greenday - apparently he installed an Auto... 'mericans!
You do get a decent, rust free selection of euro cars in aus. Problem is that they've normally done many hundreds of thousands of k's. But replacing suspension parts is easier than bodywork.

MG or british leyland? the mini was like that.

South africa is better as they had Lancia and Merc factories. Looking at the aus stuff if was most was jap and leyland or renault.

Not really talking about cars built in Australia, more what's available and still on road. I have read though that the south African Mercedes-Benz 230 was the best one to get. Better carpets, and uprated mechanical spec? Could be myth...

• #26166
Which 230?
When I went looking I went for w108/111/113/114 as they were the ones I knew I could sell as well as lancia that I wanted.

I rly like the narrow bodied 997 and the 3.6 is more reliable than the 3.8.
It's under £20k...

No IMS issue with these engines?

Those wheels are a right PITA to keep clean though.

After a new motor, something low cost and small that the Mrs can learn on. It sits on the road most of the time, so paying £230 a year tax for my Volvo is a bad economy, plus it's way too big for a learner. Any recommendations? Thinking something about 1.2l, petrol, low tax and insurance bracket.

• #26171
Wow. If I was in the right stage of life I'd buy this now.
Can't wait.
That's really nice value.

• #26172
Why did they have to make it so ugly and are we still in the 90s with those TSW Venoms?
-
• #26173
"beautifully built in 1996"

spend a few bob on the setup and i reckon that would be a hoot on a track

Ditch the bonnet, replace 18s with smallest diameter, but at least 8" wide, wheels that will fit over the bigger brakes, twin roll hoop with a proper rear cage, and it'd be pretty lol-tastic on track.
Lol.
