  • A mate lost most of his 740 turbo wagon when the brake fluid tank melted/ burst dumping a pretty decent amount of flammable liquid onto the turbo housing. The size and stock location of the heat shields on those 9xx/7xx turbo cars were not the best.

  • Discounting the mortgage my borrowings were nil, so it made sense to borrow at that sort of rate.
    And my mortgage is going to be paid off soon anyway.

  • Depends if it is a native left or modified right hand drive.

    From memory the right hand drives 7xx/9xx cars have the engines in line and canted over to the right (when standing infront of the car) , being rear wheel drive and the turbos sit mid engine while the brake servo and cylinder sit over the the chasis rail/inner wing join. Even with a t5 conversion the turbo isnt that close.

    The clutch hydraulic flexi pipe on the other hand is in a poor position and should be changed on a regular basis or re routed with a longer braided steel hose.

  • Whom ever told you they would get to 60mph with the overdrive has no fillings nor hearing. The 2 1/4 diesel is basically the same engine. Parts aren't that cheap, the difference is that you can work on them but if you upgrade the engine you need to upgrade all the mechanical and brakes. Hence getting away from originality. Can you diagnose a failed condensor or a cracked dizzy cap? Maybe time to step away from the nostalgia.

    A Landie of that age needs alot of everyday care and not using it everyday you will find that they are not happy. Why not go for a 110 or 130? I'd recommend the V8 as its a V8.

    The diesels what is the effect of the LEZ on the conversions?

    Friend is selling a 1999 TD5 for 6k. It is a nice one, just not being used as he is in Dubai.

  • Yeah, I know being able to achieve a top speed with overdrive ≠ wanting to attain that speed. From what I've read top speed of diesel is 45, petrol 55, add 10mph for overdrive.

    That's true and if you're buying a SIII as a classic you really want the original engine, not a TDi.

    Those are all good points. I wouldn't want a 110 or a 130 because parking. V8 cos thirsty.

    Would be interested to see details of the TD5 out of interest if you could send me something?

  • have you driven one? i drove one in aus and i'd rather dip my plums in a bowl of scorching hot tabasco than drive one for five hours to a campsite in the country. and that was on flat, straight roads...

  • If you want a Land Rover, they became infinitely better on and off-road once they had coil springs. And if it was me, it would be a V8 on LPG. You get shit economy whatever engine, so you might as well have the best one.
    Mind you if it was me it would be a 3 door Range Rover.

  • Just get a white Range Rover on finance and sell coke to doggers to complete the look.

    You're already close to Essex so the final transition will be easy enough.

  • I'm 27 and I've never actually driven a fast car. I was supposed to have one of those drive a Porsche on a track experience days and got a puncture on the way and they wouldn't let me reschedule. I was excited about driving the Golf GTI, let alone the Porsche.

    Can I come to a track with someone at some point? I recently chose a 'sensible' car over a fast car again so there's not much chance of me buying something good for myself any time soon.

  • You can get 65 to 70 from a 2 1/4 petrol, not that you'd want to. I had one for a few years and the only good thing about it was the profit I made when I sold it.... You will rapidly become bored of the fuel gauge dropping at the speed of sound, particularly until it warms up (until then you will get better mpg from a Lamborghini), not good news in London. They're horrible to drive on a run, although you may reach the dizzy heights of 20mpg. Landies are agricultural vehicles, it's all they're good for (and why I had mine), at the same price there are umpteen better, more modern, vehicles. By the way, the V8 is no more thirsty and much better to drive (which isn't saying a lot), this is in the real world, ignore published figures.

  • TD5 is a nice engine and not shocking for longer drives , the early ones 1999 onwards are still good and not madly expensive compared to the recent TDCI variations

  • Pretty epic. Apart from malfunctions there's no power drop from altitude. I wonder how long before ICE cars are irrelevant at Pikes Peak.

    Also, that road is still scary, even being paved.

  • Sensible cars are much easier to hire, which is why I bought a fast one :-)

  • I was wondering about power density - clearly it's not an issue for them having enough energy on board for 1,300 bhp/2,200Nm of torque for ~8 minutes, which as you say (barring malfunctions) is undiminished by the thinning atmosphere.

    An electric air-racer would be cool.

    Like a Red Bull air race plane? If so yes, extremely cool. I think weight would really determine the possibility of that though. A ducted fan design might help though.

    The one thing you really notice with high performance electric drive machines is the linear acceleration. Must feel a lot more brutal than the smoothness suggests.
