Gentlemen - always put the best possible fuel that you can.
My GTI has a yellow engine light that comes on when inferior fuel is added - sometimes there's no option, but the light goes off when you add the better fuel.

Does bp still do 102 rated fuel?
-
• #23833
Don't think so. Certainly haven't seen it around for a long time, although I tend to avoid BP as there is quite a lot of anecdotal evidence that it doesn't agree with Subaru engines..
You can't get E85 (85:15 ethanol/petrol mix) anymore either which is a shame as it's great for tuning (it's RON is typically around 105)

ok, so looked in the manual last night... (its an actually an App these days, which is pretty handy!), and it says minimum RON 95, which is what i put in. Odd that it says 97 on the filler cap.
Filled it up with RON 99 this morning anyway.Crisis averted.

The difference will be that the minimum RON rating will be to keep the car running in a fault free condition, and the one on the filler cap is the recommended one to provide optimum performance and economy.

Wasn't that how BP and optimax get the high rons?
The problem with ethanol fuel is the interaction with older bits of a fuel system.
-
• #23839
I read recently that the ethanol in the high RON fuel makes seals and so forth perish. Don't know the veracity of that though.

• #23840
There are lots of issues with motorbikes, especially in Europe with the high ethanol unleaded, there are even issues with tanks leaking.
-
• #23841
Only ever use premium unleaded, it's not that much more expensive and my cars deserve it. Used to be a right pain in the knackers driving around the midlands on fumes looking for a Shell station that sold Optimax

What do you drive?

I used to get a noticeable performance improvement in the Merc if I gave it the good stuff.
The Porsche demands it, as does the Vespa.
The Triumph can run on the 95 but when it's overdue a service and running like crap then it runs better on the 98. -

Audi S5 4.2 went screaming past me on the m40 today, that v8 sounded very tight
-
• #23845
They changed the later ones of those to the 3.0V6 supercharged...the early ones sounded awesome

Nice - I learnt to drive in my Dad's MGB. Makes me want one. Though the sound on that film was appalling (apart from the exhaust note of course!)

1/3 less torque than my cls tho ;)

Hmm. This is the only information I have but it appears that Elite Classic Cars in Lancashire are making 5 replica Countach Periscopo Lp400s with Audi V8 running gear. If real, yummy!
Paul Laurenson was the designer of the original Prova Countach, so it should be a good'un.

that'll (all 5 of them) be very droolworthy
In the Scooby using normal unleaded means you get an ECU-driven double whammy of retarded timing and less boost. There's a noticeable loss in power, which you can fix by resetting the ECU and running it on some decent fuel.
