  • I still think that the environmental, visual and noise pollution created by car reliance, particularly in urban areas, is incredibly bent. They have been massively detrimental to the public life of the city. It is very weird to look at old modernist drawings of the utopian 'autoscape' where the car is heralded as the great saviour of the city, providing fast, clean and efficient transport for the masses. The reality has proven entirely different.

you can also says the same about a city with mass cycling, it sound fantastic and provide a reliable clean cheap way to travel, but in reality we only need to look at Vietnam, Korea, etc. at the sheer number of cyclists who just use their bike for work only, obviously they're 3rd world countries (apart from S. Korea, I think), but the point still stand don't you think?

mind you cities like Amsterdam has just about got it, it would be fantastic if Amsterdam have a car-free central, from 9am to 7pm.

perfect utopian? a city where people only allowed to walk.

  • they implemented this concept to a whole city. Brasilia. Apprently they never get any congestion it is a city prefectly engineered/designed for the car.

    that's a joke right?

No, the perfect utopia (a perverse ideal at best) would have a brilliantly-conceived integrated public transport system with many different modes provided for. On a sidenote, I was in Paris last month and really impressed by how many people there were riding around on those public bikes. brill.

  • Yes Texas, but Brasilia is a fucked-up monster of a city. The idyllic centre, with its acres of green parks and perfectly white civic buildings/sculptures, is surrounded by slums where those who built it were forced to live. There's no congestion because no-one lives there. It's a classic example of what happens when the car is put ahead of the individual (as is often the case in our own cities). Brasilia is, in my opinion, the worst that architects and planners have to offer. After Dubai and Abu Dhabi (of course).

  • nothing like throwing bad money after bad.

  • Amazing, page 24 before a Jaguar E-Type makes an appearance.
Here's the coupe, which many believe is one of the most beautiful of cars, ever.

    Don't forget Milton Keynes too.

yeah, a last resort really, but on a serious note, as long it got decent public transport, I'm sold.

  • BTW, the Porsche 914, is still best seen in many parts of Florida and California. I've only seen one here in 24 years.

The D-Type, can still be bought, but its not the original. Lynx, here in the UK can help. http://www.lynxmotors.co.uk/index1.htm

A modified E-type can be bought, almost fully remade, and modified with modern brakes and suspension, gearbox, and engine....from Eagle. http://www.eaglegb.com/etypes/20-jaguar-e-type-1965-series-1-42-coupe-for-sale.html
