Those damn cars

This thread seems to have taken a bit of a bad turn. In an attempt to convert anyone into a car lover, here's what partially did it for me.

I was hoping that would be a bit from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
Seriously, who wouldn't want a car that could fly and be a boat?

Oh, and I'm still of the opinion everyone needs to chill the fuck out. None of this will pass until you heathens can let your blood pressure drop long enough to realise you're all being idiots... and that includes every damn one of you.
Now, on the car front... this is the kind of thing I need to drive around the Amalfi Coast in:

@ VB, that is a lovely car, may I make your decision a little more difficult?
Very stylish, plus, if you get bored of cruising along, you can have a mountain of fun chucking it around those hairpins.

As I'm stuck indoors with a triple dose of man flu I've had the opportunity to read the whole of this thread. The only conclusion I'm left with is that a celebration of power and wealth in the form of motor vehicles on a bike forum is naive considering as London cyclists we come into contact (close) with motor vehicles every day . I can appreciate the aesthetic and engineering qualities of these motors but when some pimped up puke yellow punto chav tries to run me off the road 'for a laugh' I'm going to be one of the 'haters'. That’s life threatening - not some dodgy pm's or 'tags'.
I could of course ignore the whole thing but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t still exist.

Can I suggest something, why don't you organise drinks on auto-appreciation so you can all meet up, bring your auto magazines and share the love because I tried to learn a bit on this thread as I know nothing about cars and all I see are pics of cars (red seems to be a popular colour) with people saying "I like that one" "oh no that one is not as good as that one" and then someone post a comment that the auto appreciation gand does not take well, then a bit of trantrum and drama, nobody likes me, then oh yes everybody likes you, people on this forum are nasty and vile, so much hate, followed by more pictures of cars, yeah but what about that car, more drama, why are you picking on me, more pics of cars....
well, thanks for the suggestion, but i think we'll just continue to do it here, online.

That's exactly my viewpoint, however, as long as your hate is directed at the drivers, not the car.
For example, when coming up near some cars, I will be much more careful as I know that more people than usual drive these cars badly, however, that does not mean that I hate the car, unfortunately it just attracts the wrong sort of people.

As this whole thread was started by a professional urban cyclist who spends every working day alongside cars i guess it can't really be classed as naive...if he can handle it i'm sure you can.
And nobody who has posted cars on here has posted anything along the lines of a puke yellow punto or indeed promoted driving as if they want to run people off the road for a laugh..
Why not just sit back with a nice hot cup of beechams flu plus and a copy of pretty woman and let it be. -

Having seen the way some people (even people from this very forum) ride their bikes when they are so pissed that they can barely stand, it would be just as easy for one of them to cause an accident on the roads that could result in the death of innocent adults and children travelling in cars.
Very good point Scott. The "riding drunk" thread really depressed me; strangely it didn't attract the disapprobation that this thread has. No-one, curiously, pointed out that riding when you are pissed is the very opposite of being community minded; or indeed pro-bike.
I started this thread. The title "Car chat. For chat about cars" was a parody of the sort of thing you hear on local radio. With hindsight I should have called it "car appreciation" to make it clear I wasn't looking to start a discussion about car culture, ethics, green politics yadda yadda. Infact I wasn't looking to start a discussion at all. I only started it to stop another thread being derailed. It's popularity shows there are a lot of people who like to look at cars. Maybe some people find that disappointing; well, that's how I feel when I see the sexist and heterosexist crap on the half-naked-women-on-bikes thread. So I largely ignore it but I don't dismiss the people who contribute to it as bad people either.
The vituperation and animosity that this thread has provoked is dispiriting with people I know and like at each other's throats in an endless tit-for-tat.
I'm just glad I didn't start the "Met chat. For chat about the Met" thread I had in mind. -

i disagree. some cars rightfully deserve our hatred. for example:
http://stadium.weblogsinc.com/autoblog/hirezpics/hummer_de06.jpgalso admittedly in this case it's also right to blame anyone who wants to drive one of these.
if anyone wants to accuse me of being anti-car or whatever else, errr.... i'm not.

Not true, I myself posted this.
It is a bike, it just has 4 wheels =Pthat's the nuts, I'd look the bollocks wearing my Rollapaluza cap and driving that bugger to a nice country pub on a sunday afternoon for (one) pint of old fucker and a cheese ploughmans.
except for that to be viable it would have to be 20 years ago, or we would have to reduce the population in the uk quite drastically, otherwise it's just another gridlock joke car journey.
thats the problem with cars, not the cars but people.

You've said you hate "this car" but failed to post a pic of "this car", what you accidently posted was a collection of metal slabs stuck together and then painted a ridiculous colour then polished too much to excentuate the ridiculousness, now please get back on the topic of cars =P

not true, it's mainly in london and the cities that the traffic is fucked. round here i can drive for miles and miles without having to stop for traffic, indeed i can drive for ages without seeing another car, sometimes.

• #1142
thin end of the wedge, the whole of the UK road network is over-used.
except the bit around your house, clearly.
I'll get back to you in the new year, when I've driven to rye, bristol and newport.

i'm not making it up. compared to london, it's a dream around here. the A roads get busy, sure, but it's not constant gridlock by any means.
when i lived in SW london, popping a coupel of miles down the road in the car could mean 45 minutes of misery. i'm sure all londoners know what i mean. but here, it's a 2 minute journey followed by parking at the end of it. -

I was saving that for a thread about CliveO and Platini.

O dont really see why this thread has to be defended over and over. Yes, it's about cars on a bike forum but, what about these threads?
Coffee Appreciation
Tea... an important issue
Merry Christmas...
Offered: Double Bedroom in Vegan/Veggie House in Dalston
What are you listening to?
Are these bike related?
I like this forum because is isn't just about bikes. I find it is more about the people who ride there bikes and what ever interests then be it tea, cars, snowboards, or what song you are listening to at that moment? When I meet people from the forum we dont just speek about bikes. We speek about all sorts of things. Threads are just the same a conversations, just on the computer.
Thats what I think anyway.
Ive made this point over and over .. some people apparently are hypocrites , its "ok" for them to contribute to a mound of other topics... but a car thread?...? no no... that's VERY different!
@veevee....there are certain individuals who have not objectively discuss why they dont like cars but have personally attacked- be it on this thread or pm'd etc..... especially towards me, in saying that... I notice you and a few other members who clearly have a problem with this thread are quite often lurking in here, you dislike it but keep coming back? I might also note of no other thread Ive seen where people who have no interest in the topic start attacking another member because they do....can you imagine that in photography? or the music thread?such a joke
why dont you and others who disagree simply move on??? as Ive said before, you dont like? dont read!! it comes down to personal choice, you and those who dont like cars dont decide whats acceptable on a forum so yr post about us " getting together" is a joke...its another topic like MANY OTHERS!!... no likey? just go then! bye bye...
lastly... although only a contributor to this thread not the founder of it I seem to have been sectioned out for the wrath of abuse from the anti car folk....BUT the messages of support I have received from everyone else has been overwhelming, it is a minority the few that cant be objective and feel it necessary to be nasty, insignificant in fact compared to the amount of forum members who not only support the thread but take it for what it is even if they are mostly cyclist ...its just another topic in misc and meaningless...like all the others...
grow up and move on.

I'm lurking in here all the time, just waiting for Michael to run out of images to stay on topic. ;)
sadly that one the pic is of was in Americaland - The one in Aus was where he wilfully ploughed into a group of riders as he was getting narked off with them delaying him
