• I haven't ridden a freewheel bike for 11 years (since my 16th birthday) when my Grandad gave me his old beater. It has lasted me well and I have had no need for another bike. Though becoming a member of this forum has given me lustful eyes.

  • I feel much more at one with the bike when riding fixed and clipped in. I jumped on my racer last night with platform pedals (V12s have amazing grip), but felt like Bambie on it, after a while i was used to it, but was far too agressive when appying rear brake. because i've become accustomed to not having one. Tbh, although only been riding fixed for couple of months and freewheel since about 6yrs i feel much more controlled on my fixed.

  • I am slowly getting used to switching over regularly, now. Its taken a few months of switching bikes to get like that. Still I do have momentary lapses when I forget that I have to use levers (on a freewheel) in order to stop or even just slow a bit. And my brakes are NR single pivot Campagnolo. Which is like a sort of constant adrenaline drip-feed hit everytime I ride in traffic.

  • I'm on day 3 of riding fixed. I was an extremely confident rider on a geared bike and it's been a humbling experience going fixed, ie I've almost crashed and shat (not necessarily in that order) several times, particularly when attempting to coast over bumps n that. Today it felt more natural - relying less on the brakes, more on my legs - but I'm still finding getting in and out of the clips and straps a pain. Also I have had a slight motion sensation after riding - my whole body going side-to-side - like what you get after being a boat for a few days. Anyone else had this?!

  • nope, if you´re constantly switching between geared bike and fixed wheel bike, it shouldn´t even have an impact.

however thought if you have been riding fixed wheel for months, even years, then it would come as a surprise.

As usual ed you've hit the nail on the head, I don't switch constantly, I use my geared when I have mechanical problems with my fixed, which usually lasts at least a week or two before I have a chance to fix/jury-rig/take to LBS... About three times in the last year, after each time, I forget I can't freewheel.

The opposite happens too, the first time in a while I go geared I forget you can freewheel, but that doesn't really cause a problem, at least not as much...

Hmmm, can't decide if I should try to use the geared on occation just to mix them up or carry on as is...

Funny thing is that my fixed is a beaten up holdsworth (frankenbike) that is almost the same age as me and my geared is a shiny silver trek racer... If I had to label one as a beater it would be the trek... I don't think anyone outside of this forum would think the same way...

  • yeah, I'm often in the middle of a race when I wake up. usually doing better than I do in real life.

same with the dreams about women

    aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhh.

there's a cuddle waiting for you tonight RPM..

  • After riding both fixed and free regularly for waaaay too many years it's always the free that feels odd and clunky, the fixed just feels more natural.......

  • last time i was on a freewheel i almost came off going round a corner because i forgot to use the brake instead of back peddaling. it is entirely different going from fixed to freewheel and to be honest since ive moved to fixed i've only thought about going back once
