If you REALLY dont want to go to the doctor phone up NHS direct and get some advice from the nurse who will answer
..who will tell you to get to a doctor....
cut out the middle man Ju, get going!!

the lady said that the nurse will call me back. In four hours as they are very busy.
NHS walk in centre will be closed by the time I get there so I guess I will go in the morning -

go to your nearest hospital with a minor injuries unit, the que is almost nonexistant and if you need more then they can do, they will get you to an A&E and jump the que for you.

I have one of those as we speak. Due to numerous polo falls on the same hip. It's a hematoma which is a swollen bursis. (Filled with blood). I've had it for a while yet a big fall last weekend made it worse. I've spoken to numerous bmx folk about this and they've all had it. Some last forever and can lead to possible probs in old age. I've not gone to see anyone and will live with it but try to go easy on the falls. Got some crashpants for polo now too! Don't worry! ;-)
Sayin that..if it's pretty big then go get it drained! -

Don't take the advice of a bunch of strangers on the internet! Go and see a professional who's paid to know what to do!

Don't seek help. Go get help.

A quick bit of advice for yee all, never burst a blister or welt or anything like that. The plasma or puss is there for a very good reason, it speeds up recovery and should burst or subside through normal day to day wear.

OK, Julio has been at the NHS walk in centre for the last 2 and a half hours.
I suggested she post some photos to assist with a more accurate diagnosis.
Heres hoping. -

howdy
with the usual disclaimers along the lines of go to a doctor, can't comment without seeing the injury....
this sounds like fluid within a bursa (pocket) that sits over the bony bit of your femur ie the greater trochanter.
it normally has a small amount of lubricating fluid in it to allow smooth movement of the bone as the hip moves. If injured it fills with fluid - presumably as a Darwinian protective cushion.
In itself not a problem. If infected a big problem potentially. Main signs are overlying redness (particularly spreading), worsening pain, or limited movement of joint. May take some time to resolve. In other parts of the body is Housemaid's knee (knee), olecranon bursitis (elbow). A doctor (A+E or orthopaedic) can usually discern the difference between this and a haematoma which is a collection of blood below site of injury. May need an ultrasound to look at it. General premise is not to drain an uninfected area as sticking a needle into something may introduce bugs.Sorry about biblically long post. Not mean to be exhaustive or diagnostic.
Short answer - prob worth seeing A+E at some point, or quicker if worsening.Hope it gets better - PM if you want any further info
doc_si@stein - if these things have pus in them they will benefit from drainage. agree that plasma/'clean' fluid within will generally not

Hola!
Right, I'm back.
I waited for two and a half hours and they weren't that great...
They said they dont know what it is. They also said that they didnt have an orthopaedic specialist this evening who would have more of an idea. They said that its probably not a haematoma but that if it got worse or if I suddenly couldn't walk that I should go back.
So surely that means that it* could* be one?Anyway, they said to just go and see my GP and get an ultrasound.
So I'm not dying.
Phew!@Growup. A picture wouldn't show much - it just looks like I have a fat hip on one side. I've been one sided pie eating

Glad you are back alive. Hope you get better quickly.

Technically yeah, but it's more that they don't want to count it out..
I started getting migraines when I was younger and had MRI scans to see if it might be a tumour.. As always, better safe than sorry
