  • Haven't spotted too many of those Unipack cycles since it got cold, wonder why?

I saw some idiot on one in Hammeredsmith yesterday morning.

  • I left turbo last night around 10pm... it was fucking slippery.. I was amazed at the funky crystalized ice on the tops of cars.. luckily post-turbo I can't speed even if I want to. Same deal this morning although a bit less sketchy.

  • i've seen a few. weirdly i've seen two in the changing rooms of my local swimming pool in the space of a week (while all the other bikes are locked up outside). i wonder why *that *is? not used to riding a bike everyday? forgotten your lock again?

ah well. at least they're riding.

  • So, hippy, what's the optimum tyre pressure for a rider of 114 kilos? Fill it with concrete or just ride on the rims?

Where do you do the turbo thing? Wouldn't mind a go

  • Neg rep me.

Just trying to be helpful. I've never neg-repped anyone for such things.

This but i wouldn't go with Hippy

Thanks, ask a a stupid question....

  • Yeah the roads are a lot clearer. cold sorts them out, always does. that and the christmas parties (best clothes, late nights and hang overs) they will only get better.

It would be nice if those that decided to drive would clear their windows so they can see before they head off.

  • RE: Tyres a few pages back.

Some tyres are a bit better in the wet but in general I am afraid you just have to accept that it is slippery in the wet, you have to be more cautious in the wet and go slower round corners.

  • I guess you could fit semi-slick skinny MTB tyres? Cyclocross tyres? Could be an option in the winter months, if you've got the clearance. Shocked at how little grip I had today

  • Well it was frosty.

Tread does not make a difference on the road. A Wider tyre can arguable help a bit but as I said it's standard you can't ride / drive / run in the same manor when wet or frosty as you can in the dry. Even people who live in Canada or Sweedeb who run studded tyres have to take it easy. The studs improve the situation over no studs but it's still slippery.

  • I came off this morning at a dodgy junction by a little park near kenninton tube. It's a raised roundabout really smooth tarmac and apparently icy as fuck at 8.00 in the morning so watch out. Had both wheels wash out and slid for ages but somehow both me and the bike escaped relatively unscathed. The slide was kinda fun in a way too, once I realised I was OK. Got to rate MKS Sylvan pedals, the dust cap took the full brunt of the slide but the pedal still runs great! Hope they get the gritters down the small roads tomorrow!

  • had a massive bail last week on the NS which is running halo twin rail tyres, 2.25 wide!! on the final corner before home turned sharply and at pace into cobblestones bike went out from underneath me, managed to throw myself under it so its fine im a bit scraped though and the confidence took a knock

  • What a strange morning, the roads out in my part of the suburbs were a mixture of bone dry, very damp and thick frost. Sometimes all within 100 metres of each other.

  • It's the shadows you got to watch. you can't see the stuff glisten but its sheet ice and feels like riding over manhole covers!

  • Polo yesterday was mad. I have a fucked knee, hip and elbow, and bled all over my sheets last night.
    [/feeling sorry for myself]

Damp is where they've put the salt out, stops it freezing, but the hydroscopic action of the salt draws the moisture from the atmosphere onto the road.

So that's where the shiny surface comes from?

Last night, coming home from the cinema, I was slipping all over the place on my feet. Fun. This morning there was lots of icy surfaces out in the burbs.. city slickers can worry less I guess since the larger traffic volumes?, more salting? seems to remove the ice from the roads.

  • I crashed yesterday out in the lanes of Kent. Came up to a left hand corner and as I turned the bike went from beneath me as the whole road was one big sheet of ice. There followed a comedy moment as I tried to get up on the icy surface before the car I could hear approaching got to the bend. It was like Bambi on Ice. Grazed my left elbow, hip and knee and tore my bibtights and have a slight tear on my softshell jacket.

  • I had my first winter stack this morning.
Slippy slippy as I went around a lefthander - I nearly hung onto it, then ended up on my cornpipe.
Bartape fucked, battered elbow and pride dented.

Was in Kent myself yesterday, it was terrible. Thick frost on the ground nearly all day. The sun hit it for an hour or so in the afternoon then it refroze. I'm sure it was milder last winter?

  • Were I live (west Norway) we've had clear skies and freezing temps (-4 midday) for a week.
Oddly enough, as the frost layer thickens so does grip (at least with studded winter tyres).

This morning it was +5, with 10cm of snow on the ground, and light rain in the air. By the time I got to work I looked like a giant vaguely human shaped slush puppy.

If its cold tonight, the lumpy slush will turn to lumpy ice, which makes for pretty tricky riding conditions.

    I love it though.
It means that my commute varies wildly from day to day, even if the route does'nt ;)

The exact reason why I couldn't be arsed to go out on my bike yesterday. Bad luck Andy. And bad luck to you too, BRM.
