Why did you even post this? the guy is just askign about gear ratio, on a fucking fixed gear website, we all ahve fixed gears, and you did untill you crashed yours. it's not like he's asking for the best ratio to cycle Mt. Ventoux or something

maybe he meant ride a bike with gears to find a comfortable gear to use single speed. then when yo ufind a gear you like on the roadbike count the ratio

if so that would be a stupid suggestion because when riding fixed you have to take into account braking ease. I ride a much higher ratio on my road bike around town because its much easier to brake suddenly. I normally push around 85 + gear inches around town on the road bike but 74 on the fixed. Spin ftw

FFS! I mean it seriously! If the chap wants to try different gear ratios, try them on a geared bike and see what he likes, then use same on fixed! makes sense right? I give a couple of opinions on using risers on a fecking steel fuji track and everything I say is trying to be a dick head!?

Okay, im stupid them. At least it give an idea.

its true what Bens saying tho, you want a totally different gear ratio for fixie skidder than you would on a geared bike.
i found using a pretty standard 46-16 then felt i wanted slightly lower so stuck a 17 on the back to make it 46-17.
use this to check skid patches http://software.bareknucklebrigade.com/rabbit.applet.html
although i own an 'ugly Fuji track' with 'horrible welds' so what would i know!

Scott when you get a nice lugged bike again with your drops, i will put my risers back on my fuji and we can have a race and see what happens

I own an uglier Fuji track than Voidcores :P but I'll throw my 2 cents out there anyway:
Riding fixed isnt the same as geared but it will give you some incidation ^^ If you consider flywheel effects, straighter chainline etc, then you can usually push a gear a couple of ratio's harder on the fixed for pretty much the same effort as riding a geared bike. Riding geared then finding a gear you spin on your usual terrain most comfortably, then choosing a ratio 2 higher or something is good for riding (but probly wont help as much with choosing something for skidding around easily).
Plus your ratio is going to depend on the type of riding you do, I ride 48:15 (approx 84") on my fuji track, its fast and comfortable but there is no hope of skidding around (for me anyway).
With skidding there is a way to work out how many skid patches, you simply simplify the ratio as far as possible and the denominator indicates the number of skid patches. This assumes you always use the same leg possitioning to skid. Check Sheldon Brown's site out for explinations in more depths. but one example, I ride 48/15 so this will simplify down to 16/5, meaning this ratio has 5 skid patches.

^ Rob knows what I mean :-P
I rode 42 - 15 and 48 - 17 and 48 - 18 was my favourite is 48 - 18, but I can't tell you whats best for you. you could buy a range of cogs and try, but basically most common I think is around 75gear". so if you got a 48t chainring I'd try 17-18-18 cog. However some people such as rob have 84gear" so you muight also want to try 15-16, but I wouldn't consider it. mabye this is more useful than my other comments, but no one can tell you what is best for you, because it varies a lot.
