  • be prepared to sell your bike to raise the cash though....

  • I love that (possibly apocryphal) story about an ex-pat American woman who was merrily giving her young kids what she thought was this^ nonsense when she was actually givng her kids proper English cider. For months and months. Then someone pointed it out to her that she was filling her kids with 5% vol. drink! Imagine her fusty amercian distaste for 'liquor' fuming at this mistake! I love it.

El Guapo. Why not just use decent cider? I would recommend Addlestones or try some french cider, like Breton Brut Traditionnel or Normandy cider like 'Bayeux'. When you cook this turkey the alcohol will exaporate so the dish won't contain booze anyway. I use cider A LOT in cooking, things like pork and fowl. Its an excellent way to make a good stock in casseroles.

Hope you work it out in time - is thanksgiving this thursday? I'm suddenly remembering having thanksgiving with friends in New Orleans - amazing. They do this thing called 'Cafe Brouleau' (sp?) which is this brilliant brandy/coffee/spice/sugar/orange thing, made days and days in advance to brew it up, that they burn ceremonially with the lights out, much like us with our Christmas pudding, using a large silver bowl kept especially for this purpose. It was fantastic!

  • Talking of cider, does anyone fancy sharing a batch of this over the winter weeks? Need to buy in bulk to make it worthwhile.

  • " a nose of apple which leads onto a floral, spicy palate with a touch of spirit followed by a long lingering aftertaste"

From an apple grower I know in Somerset.
    Its the nuts..

    It's the pips.

  • I recently got some Snake charmer cider from here http://www.newforestcider.co.uk/
apparently they go to borough market once a week.

If you go down this w/e bear in mind there is also a bike jumble on in the village hall which is more or less opposite the cider shop.

  • I think there's a stall which sells it at Broadway Market on Saturday mornings. Although it may just be posh apple juice. Anyone else know it? Right outside the Twat & Muppet.

  • Weird! I just Googled 'cider Broadway Market' and the second listing is a post that i posted on the polo thread a few weeks back. LFGSS interweb take-over!

  • Can't you just use some normal cider? Cooking is always tastes better when there's abit of booze in it. Try Waitrose, usually pretty good for speciality stuff. Or any good independent deli.

  • ethanol evaperates at 78.2 ish deg c any way.

  • Ahhh, yes. But the flavour doesn't ;-)

  • @GrowUp

Burrow Hill was my local as a kid. Used to ride up there for some of the good juice! if you ever get chance try their Kingston Black Aperitif.. Its a real one to savour

Head to Camra and check out cider growers. there are a few near by but your best bet is a real good single variety apple juice (organic)

Good spot on the french Cider Skullyman they are fine.. as for the barking spider that put forward Kopparberg... seriously.....!

  • Elguapo - perhaps you can find a place that does unfiltered juices (juice bar?) and that will get you pretty close. I don't think that you'll be able to get it made from the same varieties but you might be able to get close - you'll just need to balance the varieties.

I have to check out this Broadway market place. I guess the reason I asked in the first place is because I live in Uxbridge and there aint no Cider like I'm looking for up here. I though maybe if I asked you lot I could get some ideas on where to look before made the journey into the big shitty.

I F'in Love Thanksgiving! No religion involved, it's just about hanging out with your family and friends, eating amazing food until you cant move, drinking loads and plopping down on the sofa to watch American football (which I couldn't care less about, except for holidays and super bowls) Unfortunately I am spending Thanksgiving with a bunch of people I dont really get on that well with, but it's all I got for now. The missus is coming to town the next day! Woohoo!

  • When are you riding in to town for your cider hunt?

  • My girlfriend seems to like Dicken's cider.

  • Wrong type of cider...this is what Elguapo is looking for...

It's basically the apple juice that they use to make fermented cider...that why I suggested the juice bar

  • Well in that case buy a load of apples and potato ricer and get mashing.

    So cloudy apple juice then.

You can get it everywhere, even tesco. http://www.copellafruitjuices.co.uk/ range is pretty good considering how available it is. However there are loads of other options and I bet some is produced within a few miles of your house.

  • Just west of Uxbridge: http://www.homecottagefarm.co.uk/

  • My girlfriend seems to like my Dick in her cider.

    fucking sick kid!

  • Non alcoholic cider? WTF?!!!

  • So cloudy apple juice then.

yup. aram i think the copella stuff is what you're looking for, easily found at tesco, sainsburys, waitrose, etc. it's pretty good stuff. not quite like some really good cider like what's available in the US around thanksgiving time, it's flavour isn't as strong, and it's a bit thinner, but very good none the less.

  • Then strain the mash through a muslim. That way, it's guaranteed to be alcohol free.
    Hijab or kidney?

  • Bunch of London types talking about cider, what do you know? Come down my local and see if you can manage three pints of Black Rat scrumpy, and then we'll see what you're made of

But if you want the best cider, or cydre as he calls it, try Eric Bordelet's. He's an ex-sommelier who's making cider on his family's lands in Normandy. Unlike British makers who often use single varietals to make their cider, he uses up to twenty or more, selected for sweetness, flavour and acidity to bring a balance. He makes a basic cydre brut, an Argelete which is a vintage cider, hut the real star is the Poire Granite, which is a perry made from 100yr old trees and is sensational, like a really good Miscato D'Asti. Costs a lot mind. Les Caves De Pyrenes import them, but there should be stockists all over London. For the UK, Dunkertons and Sheppys are my favs

But for Elguapo's purposes, as I suggested, you should get should good cloudy apple juice and mull it
