I'm finding the court reports really depressing :(

Alexis Bailey, the teaching assistant (NOT a teacher) was reported as being on £1k a month, and paying £550 a month rent. Teaching assistants earn £15k top, so he couldn't really be earning more than that. So £450 a month to live on, it's not a lot in London. It probably all goes every month on food, bills, trying to maintain some semblance of a social life. Is it that surprising when he was presented with the opportunity to pinch some stuff from Richer Sounds he was tempted?

Typically for someone doing a poorly paid job in London, he's a relatively (31) young black man. The job teaching assistants do is genuinely valuable - way more valuable than bankers. For example. But I suppose he's mindless scum, right?

Yep fucked up choice he made, clearly a man who held respect in what he did but his 'moment of madness' has seemingly fucked his future up, not scum just a very silly man. I truly hope he can find a way back to doing some good.

It appears he travelled from Battersea to Croydon to steal things so it wasn't an opportunity, it was planned. Therefore, right now, he is nothing more than a thief and should be treated as such. I agree that the job teaching assistants do is supremely valuable and unfortunately this guy has potentially fucked his career up all on his own.

yes, he looked like a really nice bloke when he was telling the press outside court to fuck off - certainly looked remorseful to me. mindless scum.

And should therefore be reserved for people with a rather stronger moral compass. He should go into banking, where his lack of judgement and casual disregard for other people's property will be a more natural fit.

I'd tell the press to fuck off, just on principle.
I'm practicing to be mindless scum though.

    Ha, exactly...

I hadn't clocked the Battersea > Croydon thing. That premeditation does make it a bit different.

The fucker earns more than I do. No sympathy at all for him, none. He wasn't caught shoplifting, he was taking part in violent looting which terrified a great number of people who are just as 'hard up' as he is and the overall effects of which have been disastrous for many poor people.

  • ^ Best response so far. Anyone else?

Yeah, cos our press are whiter than white aren't they...

Cough hackgate* cough cough* Screws of the World cough cough.

  • Maybe the swearing was a reaction to an article in the Metro he had stuck to his face, done the same myself

What the fuck has that got to do with anything? The cunt is on camera telling people to "fuck off". He is the cunt. Fact.

  • I have just seen the vid of the young guy with claret on his face, then seen to be "helped up" by hooded people then get picked pocketed. Utterly discusting. Im quite a caring person and hate to see people hurt. If i saw the young guy on the on the floor i would go out of my way to help him. But damm i would want to beat the living shit out of the people who did that to him and others who hurt for no reason.

  • ^^ Carson just said he told the press to fuck off. Only going on what he said. I've not seen it.

I don't know, I may have changed my mind on him but I still think we are at least partly responsible for creating an underclass, and that most of the rioters are probably in that underclass.

I'm still waiting for architects, surgeons, doctors, lawyers, bankers etc. to be processed by the courts.

they don't generally feature much in the criminal courts, except for drink driving and then they get the book thrown at them.

You do know a graphic designer was tried last night, right?

  • If you used those convicted of anti-social acts as a work force to give back to society that which they have taken, then you have a number of challenges.
Use them to do things like street cleaning, and there is a self respect issue already- you are making them into "fools in orange jumpsuits".
Plus, if you have a near constant supply of "re-habs" then you don't need to employ street cleaners, so the council would "right-size" the workforce, leading to a lot of unemployed former street cleaners.
So to remove the impetus to get rid of existing staff you'd maybe price the re-habs labour at market rates- but then who would employ them if they cost the same as "normals"?
Then what to do- maybe we could compel companies to employ a certain percentage of re-habs?
But then, if they have to be at work, and cannot get sacked, are they going to do anything?
It simply becomes another tax on companies, rather than a social re-habilitation program.

Just wondering if you have any experience of working with people doing community service. Also, I'd say the majority of the people out in the street probably took a very small amount from society. Probably about the same amount as the bullingdon boys club on a good night. And nothing compared to what big business side steps paying legally, but is still really, in a word, anti social.
