I don’t think it will be forgotten; sadly, like the famine in east Africa and the war in Ukraine, the media cycle is fickle and fast-moving.

I'm not claiming NSPCC (or whoever it was) are doing everything right. But having grown up in less than ideal circumstances myself, my sympathy is never on the parents' side in such cases. Unless there is some very clear evidence to the contrary I'd say fuck the mobs trying to prevent the civil servants doing their jobs.
You have to admit though, that's a really impressive degree of solidarity on display. More of that in particular would be grand.

This is sad. You never know what life has in store.

Joe Biden not seeking reelection.

Bit late to be running a democratic party primary

Beat the BBC, Guardian and NYT to the announcement there, dubs. Got more nerve than I have posting straight from Twitter. Chapeau.

Finally.
Go him for falling on his sword.
Come on Kamala, it’s your time to shine

Go him for falling on his sword.
Falling on his sword after he had repeatedly been stabbed in the front and the back by colleagues and donors

Politics innit

I find it harsh that it's been about fumbling his words when he's been doing that his entire life after overcoming his stutter.
They made a fucking virtue of it at the last election.
-
• #88512
There's quite a difference between a controlled stutter and not being able to complete a coherent sentence/manage a flight of stairs/recognise your friends/answer a basic question. He's clearly totally fucked and it's obvious to everyone -his mental decline is the story now and every slip he makes between now and polling day (which will be every time he opens his mouth) will be a massive headline.
Dems don't get much right, but forcing him out now was the only thing they could have done. Harris may not have much of a chance, but Biden had less than zero.
-
• #88513
He didn't just do his old fumbling for words thing in the debate, he wasn't able to participate coherently in the debate at all. It was a disaster. Persuading the electorate to have confidence in you is a large part of a politician's job and he failed.
-
• #88514
Close.
Persuading the electorate to vote you into POWER is the entirety of a politicians job, all that governy whatsit is irrelevant.
If competence were key, Johnson, Trump and, come to that, Hitler would not have skidmarked the underpants of history.
-
• #88515
Strongly disagree. Politicians mostly want to be re-elected, not to be blamed for bad events, not to be kicked out by their own party for becoming an electoral liability... gaining some trust/confidence from the public can make all the difference to whether a politician is seen as coping with a difficult situation or blamed for it. Some of them even want to achieve more than just being in power, and trying anything new/bold also requires some faith from the voters.
If competence were key
Where did I say that? Persuading voters to believe in you and being worthy of that belief is not the same thing.

Well my work laptop is still screwed, not everybody has been affected in my company.
It sounds like it’s a fairly straightforward fix, if you still have company mobile, which they’ve taken off most of us in the last year. So I’m an hour on hold to help desk so far.
-
• #88517
Samsies
Ours has created hubs around the U.K. you have to take your laptop there. Apparently can’t fix remotely.
-
• #88518
Yeah, they’ve not been able to fix it remotely, I’m waiting for an appointment to go into the office.
That’ll be nice, I’ve not been there in over 2 years
-
• #88519
Did you watch/listen to the debate clips?
-
• #88520
I can’t remember the last time I went into the office.
We’ve been told to go to one of our bigger offices. Nearest to me in Northampton. But I can’t drive due to a broken hand. So waiting for an engineer to come to my house. No idea how long that will be.
-
• #88521
Am I missing something or are you guys really getting hands on support or driving to Northampton to simply go into safe mode and delete a file?
Maybe you can't access safe mode without some kind of corporate admin login?
-
• #88522
Not every instance can be fixed by going into safe mode and deleting a file.
And, as you say, many corporate setups are protected from safe mode by bitlocker/etc.
-
• #88523
Yeah, we’re definitely locked out of safe mode. I work for a multinational insurer who are extremely risk averse, pun intended etc.
-
• #88524
Yes you are missing locked laptops for security.
-
• #88525
Bits, and yes it wasn't great but it's not like he was some debating genius before. Ive had illnesses that have knocked me and ive struggled mentally untill I've recovered.
Im just saying I don't think in 4 years he's gone from ok-ish to a decrepit incoherent mess.
Or the Palestine lobby and the court and the European press and the Israeli Opposition will make it a big issue during the selection of Biden's replacement. I don't think it will be forgotten.
