  • The Wakefield by election had a turnout closer to 2% below average , based on the 79 by elections since 2007. Not sure it's that valid to compare it to GE turnout.

  • Votes are private so no one can ever really know. It's all guesswork.

Found some polling which suggests about 14% of Con voters planned to switch to Lab and Con voters were about 12% less likely to be certain to vote compared to Labour. There might be other polls. https://www.survation.com/labour-set-to-win-in-wakefield-by-election/

He's probably wrong that no voters switched and it was just Tories not turning out. Would need to see more convincing polling. Either way if more than half your voters don't turn out I'm not sure you can just win them back overnight

  • Roe vs Wade overturned.

    Womb carriers, know your place.

  • So bleak.
    Just so bleak.

  • As expected, but still disgusting ;(

  • Over 12 years, the Conservatives have unmoored Britain from its foundations and perpetuated a failed economic model, accelerating the nation’s descent into disorder. For the most part, Conservatives have cheered the country on its way.

It Feels as if Boris Johnson’s Britain Is Finally ‘Sinking Giggling Into the Sea’

  • This is completely fucked.

  • Wake up to Tory spanking.
    Then Roe Vs Wade overturned.

Politically this day has reverse mirrored England's cricket innings at Headingly.

  • Birmingham Airport chief executive gets 49% pay rise

  • See? The Tories are turning us into a high wage economy. They do get all the big calls right, you know.

  • Matt Hancock has told Times Radio that he backs Boris Johnson, and that the party needs to “pull together”

    Circle Jerks circling the Wankon

  • If you have read (and if you haven’t, do so) Freakanomics you will understand that Rowe vs Wade is way more important than just what should be women’s rights to their own bodies.

I am opposed to casual abortion as birth control, but 100% behind it as a last option. Give it 15 years and watch American crime rates go through the roof again. Seriously, how stupid do you have to be to force unwanted kids onto incapable parents in inescapable circumstances?

  • Seriously, how stupid do you have to be to force unwanted kids onto incapable parents in inescapable circumstances?

It's not stupid - it's cruel, cynical and completely logical to these cunts.

  • "Rowe vs Wade is way more important than just what should be women’s rights to their own bodies."

I have read Freakonomics and I get what you are saying, but be careful you don't fall into the trap of implying the most important consideration about stuff that affects women is whether it also affects men.

We are half of humanity and we matter in our own right.

  • We are half of humanity and we matter in our own right.

True, but men won't understand that so best make sure it's made to directly apply to us somehow just in case.

  • America is so fucked up. What a terrible place to be a young person right now. It's like a race to the bottom.
What is it that has happened that has led to this reversal of rights, both here and in the US?
Does it all go back to an event that slowly started this? The economic crisis of the 2000s? The gulf wars?

  • I understand the outrage. But there are far worse places to live in the world than America still.

nine inch nails starts to play, bbc archive footage plays in slow motion, adam curtis talks in hushed tones

  • Ha. Is it Rupert Murdoch's fault?

  • But there are far worse places to live in the world than America still

True, but they don't bang on about being the best place in the world to live, were arguably the best place to live for a while, at least if you were white, and actively make a lot of those worse places worse.

  • Does it all go back to an event that slowly started this? The economic crisis of the 2000s? The gulf wars?

Toxic combination of low to zero entry cost mass communication delivered unmediated and unverified between individual to individual and the flattery of the individual ego that consumerism requires to generate desire.

A thousand "truths" all with the same authority...you deserve one that fits your pre-existing beliefs not one that raises uncomfortable doubts. After all, you're worth it.

  • What is it that has happened that has led to this reversal of rights, both here and in the US?

The far right realised that both systems depended on some sort of sense of honour and principle to work effectively; if those were ditched, they could be quickly and easily subverted. The left and centre, for all their sins, still have vestiges of principle. They didn't stand a fucking chance.

  • I've not followed the legal arguments but it does seem very strange that yesterday the supreme court judged that individual states couldn't set their own rules on gun ownership and then today judged that individual states could set their own rules on abortion.

  • If by 'strange', you mean shamelessly hypocritical, partisan and contemptuous of the people they're meant to be serving, then yeah.
