There is a load of anecdotal evidence about the man that's been published over the years that is remarkably consistent.

During his time as a journo he would regularly go for beers with colleagues or sources, then spend the evening pretending to drink but in reality never have more than the odd sip all the while taking advantage of the fact that the people he was with were loosening up to get info from them. Typical manipulative cunt behaviour. So it's quite likely he wasn't drinking but trying to blend in.

Back when Churchill was in power, and for some time afterwards, the British public had a much more realistic picture of him. If you ever see one of the endless replays of "The World at War" on history channels, you can get a glimpse of that when they talk to ordinary Britishers about their experiences - not much trust and only grudging respect for Churchill shown there. The myth making has mostly been done by younger generations. Even the King's fucking Speech had him showing up to add some gloss to the film, despite the fact that George VI at that point absolutely despised the man and wouldn't have let him near. So it goes.

We changed prime ministers during wars we were actually in, I wish the press would confront one of them with that fact.

Its all pretty amazing considering that our adversary in this war is a leader who is in his current position due, in large part, to being allowed to lie with impunity with no checks and balances.
