Saw that earlier - I can't say I'm impressed by the £500 each as reparation.

I thought this was just a dead cat story to distract from Epstein but now, well, I don't know?
Trump cancels Denmark trip after PM says Greenland is not for sale
-
• #57854
Apparently the mineral resources of Greenland are worth about a trillion dollars and strategically very important too.
Trump undoubtedly sees this as either a political legacy or simply a new shill to sell a few hats.

is he trying to purchase greenland for himself? if so, then surely he can't 'cancel' a diplomatic trip because of private business saltiness?
the fact that he thinks countries can be purchased is mindblowing in and of itself.
fuck this timeline in the ear.

I think it's admirable that he at least tried to buy it, rather than "finding" weapons of mass destruction, and carpet bombing the place.
-
• #57857
Population is about 55 thousand, size is about 840,000 sq miles, that’s a lot of carpet per person.

I don't think they live spread out evenly, but I've never been there so am not sure of the cultural norms.
-
• #57859
Good point, its mostly ice cap. Fire bombing will clear the ice and make way for the golf course and hotels.

Controversial

• #57862
He can do whatever he wants, that much is clear at this point. Although usually when he does something this dumb it's to distract from a more important story (currently Epstein)
-
• #57863
someone posited this morning on the today programme that it's all an excuse to cancel his Denmark trip. Apparently Obama's due to visit the same univerity that Trump was due to speak at later this month and he didn't want there to be a direct comparison between the two events
https://theweek.com/speedreads/860160/coincidentally-obama-visiting-denmark-late-september
which is almost more fucking nuts if true
-
• #57864
But surely Trump would have bigger crowds? The biggest crowds, as a matter of fact. There are people who say there have never been crowds so big.

• #57865
Oh by the way the Amazonia is fucking burning.
-
• #57866
it was getting cut down and turned into charcoal anyway, i guess this is saving the industrialists time....

...shame about the Ayahuasca though, right?
:-P

haha. never tried it unfortunately, my air miles wouldn't take me further than holland ;)

Jokes aside though this is really fucked up.
BBC (and, since yesterday evening, German ARD) are the only major news that even bother to cover this.
Meanwhile Brazil's president actually blames NGO's for setting fires. -
• #57870
Keep seeing on social media people saying the news aren’t covering this but makes me wonder whether anyone has actually checked.
I can see BBC, Sky, CNN, Mirror, express, New York post, euronews, amongst others. Odd. -
• #57871
also, apparently a lot of the photos being shared on social media are from other fires.

They are starting to cover now, yes, after the sky has gone dark mid-day over São Paulo (3000km away).
This is going on for about two weeks now (there's satellite imagery that clearly show fires starting all over the place at August 10).
-

also, apparently a lot of the photos being shared on social media are from other fires.
..sorry what's your point here?
You do not approve that some people mistakenly illustrate the situation with a photo that's not from 2019 but from 2018 or something? -
• #57874
Stuff like this can be jumped on to question the validity of a story by certain folk with certain agendas, see Brazils pres. Accuracy of reporting can be important in that respect to ensure the story is the story and not the validity of the story coz someone used a stock image!
