Very depressing read.
I lived in Israel during the 80s and was involved in the Peace Now שלום עכשיו movement which was vibrant. The 2 state solution was accepted by main stream parties including the huge Labour movement. There were marches and gathering of thousands of people, both Israelis and Palestinians. Such a (Overton Window) shift to the right, that now the word Shalom has become negative.
I really wonder how this new nihilistic status quo happened leaving no hope for the future but continued oppression of the Palestinian people -

executions
Hardly an accurate or helpful description of the events of that day.
MOD statement is pretty disgraceful.

What’s an accurate description of shooting someone who is crawling away on their hands and knees with their back to you then?

What’s an accurate description of shooting someone who is signalling with a white handkerchief when he was killed by a bullet that struck the back of his head.

The headline on the article is different so I suspect it might not be intentional. Subs sometimes put lol headlines in as placeholders then they forget to replace them later.
I think it kinda demeans the paper to use argot in headlines but maybe that's just me.

That's not how most of the people were shot or injured that day, is it though. Most reports describe it as a pretty amped chaotic situation.
Murder would be more appropriate if you're looking for strong terms. Unlawful killings if you're not.
Execution clearly implies carrying out a death sentence based on someone's actions or supposed actions. The Gibraltar killings could be accurately described as executions imo.

I did wonder if it was a working title that never got changed.
Can't really go into it, but I once worked on a project which we internally named with the inappropriate catchphrase often used by one of the counter parties.
When it came to creating the company we were stuck for a name, so just made an acronym of the phrase and used that. #csb

Peaceful protestors, many of them kids, no threats, no reason to fire. Slaughtered by a bunch of professional killers who had prepared by stealing a bunch of extra ammo so they could shoot as many people as they could.
The only inaccuracy is that 'executions' implies that they were legal, in the non-Karen Bradley sense. And I'm not interested in being helpful - I want these murderous cunts flayed.

And what do you want to happen to those on the IRA side?

The inquiry found the killings were unjustified and that none of the 14 dead was carrying a gun, no warnings were given, no soldiers were under threat and the troops were the first to open fire.

How is that not murder?

Eight seem to have been murdered in a position offering no threat or danger to the squadies, heading away from them, crawling, helping others or in some position indicating compliance. Fourteen murdered who were unarmed and not a danger. They were shot for being catholics / Nationalists by a unit with a rep for extreme violence. Seems like executions to me

Letting soldiers fire at civilians/rioters with live rounds, what did the commanding officers think was going to happen?
No prosecutions for them it seems. Was this government policy at that time?
-
• #55896
How is that not murder?
It is imo.
Some of the killings could be described as manslaughter I guess - iirc the first shots were following stones being thrown. The commanding officers also need to be held accountable for the part they played (as well as didn't play), as do the people who covered it up afterwards.
My beef was with using the term execution. This country carries out extra-judicial killings/executions. As mentioned the Gibraltar killings / Death on the Rock / Operation Flavius - whatever you want to call it, being a prime eg of this. In that case you can debate the merits of killing terrorists vs arresting and prosecuting - both as policy and as action on the ground. Likewise the BOPE in Brazil.
I don't think Bloody Sunday played out the same way at all.
I also think that it's really odd to want to use misleading language for an event that had so much misinformation and took so long to obtain a clear picture of.

No prosecutions for them it seems. Was this government policy at that time?
It seems unlikely given the tensions that existed. More likely a toxic mix of individual soldiers attitudes and leadership combined with the events of the day. But the cover-up was clearly at a government level.

Prosecuting them for the massive casualties the Para's suffered on that day, you mean?

We take people, train them in lethal force with a variety of weapons including firearms, and then wonder about the morality of the fucked up shit they do?
In no way defending the individuals and their actions in this case but surely prosecution at CO/OC/political level is what is really needed for 'justice' to be done.
