Sure, but faced with having no access to their files many of those XP users will be able to find out how to do it online, or find someone who can walk them through it (even though they should probably talk them out of it and get them to sort out proper backups).
$60k isn't bad for a weekend of work, especially when they can learn from the mistakes (do much better sandbox detection) and release another variant and still infect hundreds of thousands of machines that won't have been patched...
Automated blockchain contracts for decryption keys would be a considerable step up from just being able to plug bits of ransomware payloads and vulnerability stuff together in a malware kit.

It's not as gruesome as you would think, more like a small bore rifle shot, but still WTF!
-
• #45209
Exactly. Sorry GH - should have made it clear it wasn't as grim as it sounded. Still fecking dreadful though and the mention of a 'spate of recent paintball attacks' is worrying also.

It looks like nothing but apparently the bullet is lodged in soft tissue near the spine so it's not worth operating. That's pretty fucked up. Imagine if it hit a disc...

Re Puerto Rico - this NYT piece chimes a lot more closely with my own experience than that piece in The Intercept

Can't see the point in sending a first time offender to prison. It's not going to fix anything is it.
Let her stay out, make her attend anger management, counciling and drug rehab, until deemed safe and pay damages to the boyfriend for a good sum of her future earnings.
But sending her to jail isn't the answer, whether she's smart or not. The press just trying to whip up a story.

Ah I really need to sub that blog, it's a good read indeed. The conclusions is on the nail.
For me; male, female, smart, dumb, career or not, a prison sentence would not be the way to bring about reform, from what appears to be an isolated and idiotic incident. People make mistakes. But it sounds like the media are just biting on the scrap they can find.
I am very anti prison. I don't really belive in it as a punishment (leading to reform), but as a means of removing repeat and dangerous offenders from a society then cannot abide by.

Will follow, thanks!
I saw a tweet this morning of a Venn diagram of Windows XP users in one circle, people who can pay via bitcoin in another. They did not intersect.
