I'm sure that's an important factor, as is a certain awareness of the conservation status of much African megafauna, and 'The Lion King' etc., but I suspect the photographs of the lion looking magnificent and lion-y would be the main factor. Then there's this:
A very large number of people are sensitive to such obvious displays of cruelty and, as the Grauniad says, taking pleasure in cruelty, while far fewer are sensitised to the cruelty involved in most animal husbandry (not that I would want anyone to be sensitised to that, as it's horrid). As another example, the political case against animal experimentation is still much stronger than that against factory farming.
Some people with a masculinity complex dope and 'win' Tours de France, others kill lions with the help of modern technology. It's the same thing in essence, you use tools to enhance yourself and fool yourself into thinking that you're more than you are.

It thought that article was going to make the point that, the outrage over the killing of the lion is based not on it's suffering, or on it's status as endangered, but on an emotional reaction to the dentist's enjoyment, so therefore the outrage is irrational. But no, the Grauniad concludes this makes the outrage more rational.
I find this enjoyment of killing magnificent animals distasteful, but I find the internet mob mentality, and desperation to take the moral high ground, repugnant.

Is it really irrational? It seems completely rational to me to be outraged by someone who enjoys killing beautiful animals for fun. Taking enjoyment in killing anything seems psychopathic: the difference in Oliver's examples of animal husbandry and animal experimentation is that the killing isn't accompanied by joy.
Doping in the pro peloton seems an odd comparison as while it may be sneaky and unwholesome generally nobody gets killed.

when kids kill animals for fun = potential psychopath.
when adult kill animals for fun = sport.

when adult kill animals for fun = definite psychopath ..... surely

people that are happy to kill animals are probably in the majority, though.

People who are happy to have animals killed on their behalf are in the majority. Confronting them with the reality of how it is done is see as very bad form.
-

I'd be hesitant to claim that. Considering that most of the world is in poverty and can't afford to eat meat often, if at all, it could be assumed that their access to meat is through their own means..
-
• #35922
That's probably right if you're talking worldwide - I was more parochially considering the UK where people tend to see themselves as too civilised to get involved in the 'farming' and slaughtering process, but not above gobbling the outputs.
-
• #35923
TBH I'm too civilised to bother getting involved in the process of making and preparing wheat, but I'm still more than happy to eat delicious cakes and bread.
I'm not convinced that, in itself, makes me a terrible human being, and ditto with animal farming*.
*caveat: i have worked, albeit briefly, on both dairy and arable farms

Rather than explain precisely what was meant in detail, but let's just bring it down to the brass tacks of what I believe - most meat eaters are wilfully ignorant, hypocritical, cruel, uncaring fuckers and all recreational hunters are cunts.

Uh oh - someone's going to ask you if you ever have dairy. Or perhaps if you own leather shoes. Maybe if you know which beers are vegan and which are not. And then they will celebrate having shown you to be a horrible, horrible, hypocrite.
