It's been dragged up from Telegraph archives by the recent NOTW bullshit but still worth a read to see just exactly what kind of office Brook and Coulson were running...
NOTW offical Harry Potter correspondant was told to appear at a meeting on day after 9/11 in full wizard outfit or else.
**SK: **We heard you weren't well. What's the problem?
**CB: **I've been diagnosed with stress.
**SK: **That bit I do know. Now, tell me about it, and we'll see what, if anything, we can do.
**CB: **There were a couple of events which brought things to a head. A few hours after the attack on the World Trade Centre, I was asked by Rebekah to dress up as Harry Potter. She wanted me to dress up and go to her office in the middle of the newsroom
**SK: **Which date was that?
**CB: **That was on Tuesday, September 11. It was the afternoon, less than three hours after [the attacks]. I went into her office and Andy [Coulson, the deputy editor] was on the sofa and Rebekah was on the phone. Andy asked me where was my Harry Potter suit and I made some excuse, saying: it's not here, it's in the photo studio. [Actually], it was in the office, but it was hardly appropriate for a journalist to be prancing about as Harry Potter. Andy told me I should always have my Harry Potter gear around, in case of a Harry Potter emergency, and told me that the morning after, I was to dress up for conference as Harry Potter. So, at that time, [when] we were working on the assumption that up to 50,000 people had been killed, I was required to parade myself around morning conference, dressed as Harry Potter.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2011/jul/11/phone-hacking-news-international-gordon-brown
Looks like this is only the start of it as far as News Internation are concerned. The Sun and The Times are reported to have illegally gleamed information about Gordon Brown over a ten year period, including the medical records of their son who has cystic fibrosis. They then used that information to run a story about him. That's beyond the pale.
Brooks will be hung out to dry now.

^ no she fucking won't unfortunately.

I don't think they'll get rid of her now, they'll use her as a lightening rod to detract attention from the Murdoch family. They'll string it out until it's impossible to keep her, but she will go.

BREAKING NEWS
News Corporation "Uninterested in a deal for BSkyB that does not include Sky News".
-
• #3537
^^ I agree.
Just had a bit of a (non-heated) argument about this with a colleague.
I don't see why you'd bother yet. Everything is moving so quickly that you can't tell how things will play. So until you do there's no point in giving up the last buffer. Sometimes its worth acting quickly and decisively (like scrapping NOTW), and sometimes you're better off waiting it out (like Cameron at the mo).
Also, what is the evidence that offering up Rebecca will actually make it all go away and let the BskyB deal go through?
Well that's my logic anyway.
Also, although I loath Brown if that Guardian article is half true then it's fucking dark, and shows up the very worst elements of journalism.

Hope this doesn't slip under the radar - more Tory guff that they have no electoral mandate whatsoever to do.
-
• #3539
Ouch. That's a disaster in the making, not sure what to make of the Guardian's timing, they should have held back a bit longer I think.
-
• #3540
No the Tories have announced it today I think. The timing is designed to stifle media debate obviously. Good day to bury bad news etc.

fuck em all to hell in a fucking handbasket made of shit. tory fucks.

This could all play into the hands of Ed The Great. The Tories aren't impressive or widely liked on their own, let alone as part of a coalition. Even the rabid Tory-boy at my work isn't satisfied with Cameron. This is the best chance Miliband will get for a while to make sure the shit sticks to them. He's not impressed either, but if he can't snatch some capital out of this saga he's doomed. This is as much a test for him as it is Cameron defending himself.

Cyclist get punched because he was in the way.
Worse thing is, police can't do a thing because the owner of the car was not using that car on that day.
Fuck sake, surely the owner is responsible for lending the car?
-
• #3546
FFS Ed. The owner had left the car unlocked, with the keys in the ignition. The car was taken by some misterious stranger, but later returned.
Resonable enough.

Car owner shouldn't be held responsible for the actions of someone else, but if they don't say who the car was lent to when questioned by the police could/would that be obstructing the course of justice?

yes

quality replies on that article - this one is gold:
I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don't have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills; skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you give yourself in, that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you.
