Should Labour win the next election, they will do exactly the same.
Labour started us along the road to a panopticon and the Tories are intent on keeping us on it.
I very much doubt that this due to any political ideology, and far more to do with a complete lack of backbone among those that choose to enter government, and voracious power grabbing by civil servants in the security services.

I feel sorry for them, that they are genuinely becomming deluded enough to be genuinely moving towards a big brother state, it just shows out absolutely out of touch the career politions are with real people.

okay this is old news,
http://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/mar/24/french-taught-to-be-gloomy
but wonder if it's relevant to the mindset of french people today, and perhaps why charlie hebdo is seen as an antidote and light relief to the French. That said, I have mixed opinions about what is being published against religious leaders and their prophets. So all the world leaders can just >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>One thing I loved about visiting Colombia recently is their sense of humour, it's very sarcastic also their play on words that produces an urban slang which all of society understands. It was great to be away from all the doom and gloom for a while.

It's not going to work though is it, even if they do introduce legislation?
The lack of technical knowledge and understanding of what they want and how it would work is breathtakingly bone-headed.
-

It doesn't need to work though.
At least, not in the ban-encryption-everyone-stops-using-encryption sense.
It's just another tool that can be used for much more that it's stated purpose.

I saw that the other day, the west have been too busy licking their own wounds/eating up the media frenzy to bother with it...
Pathetic...

It's hardly making the headlines you'd expect in Nigeria either and their President has said more about the attacks in France that the latest attacks in his own country (an election coming up so doesn't want to admit to problems probably). The Nigerian Army is now claiming only 150 deaths including members of Boko Haram, which shows how little anyone know about what is going on.

The Guardian piece was misleading, a sub-editor clearly focused on the 2000 figure from Amnesty which seems to be based on rumours and speculation. Amnesty didn't attribute the reports to anyone.
Reuters reported 'over a hundred' but that doesn't mean I'd trust the army, as you say nobody has a fix on it really.
The Council on Foreign Relations estimate that 10,000 people died in the violence last year and unfortunately that does seem feasible.

My experience with the French Manfriend: Existentialism &clearheadedness don't make for faux Happy Happy Joy Happy Happy Joy views on life.
But you can be gloomy about the world and still enjoy life and get engaged in activism. A streak for social justice may explain some of the gloom?

That's also wrong, they aren't the only ones by any means. Quelle surprise et plus ca change though.
The 100 or so people behind are the families of the dead. So all those world leaders (some of whom are among the most vilified by the groups protesting) didn't share an open space with hundreds of thousands of random people, a few days after some well armed lunatics rampaged accross the country. I'm stunned.
