This guy doesn't sound much like Breivik, who was a calm, calculating, studiedly political killer. Here I think we have a more haphazard kind of psychopath.

I think it's a shame there is a kneejerk desire for punishment by death rather than more attempt to understand the people our societies have created.

Of course they are two very different cases, but still about terrorism.

I totally agree that understanding why, or better whom, is responsible for creating these cases would be great, but has nothing to do with what to do with them once they have been created.

Lots of censorship going on, no idea what to believe. Videos filmed by the hostages and posted on YouTube were deleted, the guy was claiming it was an IS attack on Australia

He wanted a phone call with the Australian pm, a flag and recognition on news media that it was an IS attack and 8 hostages would have been released. Nothing about that on any news media

Maybe they are keeping the IS aspect quiet, so as not to give IS more publicity and encourage copycat attacks.

But the problem is that they and their supporters see it as a win-win. Die and you're a martyr to the 'cause'; survive and you're an icon. It's very hard to negotiate with this kind of logic (if you can call it that).
