Shale gas extraction (known as fracking nowadays) has been going on for about half a century.

Kinda, fracking has been used on oil and natural gas deposits for 50 years, shale gas extraction has been going on for longer but fracking to remove shale gas is relatively new and poses a lot more risks.

It's just another excuse to use up what's left of fossil fuels as quickly as possible and damn the consequences. Short termed, blinkered, I'm-alright-Jack-pull-up-the-ladder thinking at it's best.

For the sake of future generations, we should be looking to invest in renewables to ensure we're not fucking up the planet anymore.

That's true - but by its very nature it's long term.

We can't build the number of nuclear plants that we need right away - or, better, take the money from that ridiculous vanity project HS2 and develop Fusion to the point of commercial viability.

So we need gas and oil right now, and for the foreseeable, more and more as the old nuclear plants are shut down and we transition onto a mainly gas-turbine powered electricity grid.

Gas that we have to buy from Putin, granting him what amounts to immunity from us applying any meaningful sanctions/other actions.

Realistically he can do what the fuck he wants, and we have to suck it up, because he's got what we need.

I'm stockpiling wood (literally) ahead of winter, I am hoping to use as little gas as possible, just because, really.

I'd quite like to be grid-neutral, capable of micro-generating my own power needs, and maybe even distilling my own fuel for the car (they go quite fast running on methanol), but that's going to have to wait until the move to the country.

A lot of micro generation would be a big help, rather than fucking up the countryside and the watertable to keep prices down for a few years.

Well, yes and no - it is, by a huge margin, less efficient than the current system, but it doesn't require the infrastructure that we have to maintain (and need to replace largely right now).

Less efficient isn't such a problem when you don't have CO2 as a byproduct of production, either way fucking up half the country is not the answer.
