The depressing belm thread is an indication of public attitudes towards disability.
If somewhere like here can have discrimination language rules, and a generally medical model perception towards peoples perception of what and how it means to be disabled, and still thinks spastic jokes are lols, then what is the rest of non metrosexual ADD bores thinking?
About 80% of peole weren't born with a disability, but acquire it through health or accidents. I've lost count of the young men I've met who a-typical of the LFGSS demographic who crashed a bike, fell off something, recreationally deprived their brain of oxygen, for whom society shuns for various reasons.

We are all only one accident away from being disabled. Fate will decide where the spear of destiny falls next.I used to regularly post on another forum but I left it because of its constant homophobia, racism, bullying of disabled posters, etc. I don't wish to be associated with such things.

I'd say the belm thread is more about language and one persons faux offence in order to do some trolling. The use of quite bad discriminatory language (not belm) is more of a reaction to this and I very much doubt anyone actually had such views about disability, much like forum jokes about forrins, racism and cunts. I worked as a support worker for people with mental health needs and learning disabilities for years so have a reasonable idea of what living with a disability can be like for someone, at least as far as someone without one can do. I think there are much larger problems regarding disability discrimination that should be worried about before the use of the word belm and where it's origins may or may not have once come from and subsequent use of actual discriminatory language in some poor taste but suitably placed jokes that were more about offensive words and being offended for people than poking fun at disabled people. As with most other people I've met most of the disabled ones can take a joke and much prefer to be treated like everyone else, piss taking and all than obviously treading lightly around something that can be a quite obvious part of that persons character.
As a side note, and to make this post full on jeez length now that he's gone and that void needs filling, when I was training for my support worker job one of the first things we did was as a group list as many derogatory terms as we could think of for people with learning disabilities, we had a long list all the way from joey to window licker but belm never came up. -

There's a rescue operation underway of an injured spelunker in the deepest cave in Germany. Sixty people are involved in it. It's six kilometres back to the entrance.

Potholing is one thing, that Riesending (German for 'massive thing', "das ist ein Riesending" means something like 'this is awesome') cave is just something else.
I went down a small cave once, the setting of a fictional story that I read when I was little. It wasn't very long, only a couple of dozen metres, and quite safe (we didn't need any equipment), but these mega-caves must be very frightening to go down, albeit exciting at the same time.

More fuel efficient and safer lorry designs? Sorry. Your life is not worth it.
http://www.transportenvironment.org/press/ministers-reject-megatrucks-stall-safer-lorry-designs-8-more-yearsThis quote:
"... The European Parliament previously voted to allow lorry makers to introduce safer lorries straight away, without forcing them to do so. However, some lorry makers oppose changing the rules in case some manufacturers benefit more, and earlier than others ..."So basically, there are lorry producers who are ready to make this improvement happen, but the politicians listened to the laggards instead and blocked any chance of progress. A good example of how business friendly politics and market friendly politics are not necessarily the same thing.

I've done some caving, in NZ, but there were glowworms on the 'ceiling' and the deepest we went was probably about 20 metres, if that. This case in Germany is full-on mental.
Really hope they get the injured climber out.

This man doesn't care for music. He said so himself in an interview. I mean, that's it brother. You're out the door. Wipe your tone deaf feet on the way out and never call me again. People like you give people like me a worse name than we already have. Belm.
