    Fair enough.

  • USA confirmed that Russia's ICBM test was planned before the Crimean crisis. Given that they test them fairly regularly, I imagine it's not hugely relevant here.

Russian Foreign Ministry still denying that troops in Russian military gear, with Russian weaponry, Russian vehicles, disgorged from Russian APCs and ships are Russian. 'Volunteer self-defence forces'. The bare-faced lying is miraculous.

  • Yeah, fortunately the protocol for stopping the ICBM test causing a nuclear war worked as it should. Gave the mkts a right fright, though.

I heard someone claim that Russians feel morally entitled to do this because the Americans have become increasingly dependent on mercenaries for their own dirty deeds. Apparently, without uniform insignia these guys can legally be classified as the Russian answer to Blackwater and as such no invasion has taken place.

  • No surprise about the justification that the Russians may be feeling right now.
Many more regimes would have done the same except for fear of reprisal from the Usonians and their backers.

  • You could look at it another way.

On the one hand, there's the old way of doing things. The strong do what they will, and the weak suffer what they must.

On the other, the relatively recent creation of a world of rules and laws which protect the weak by reining in the strong.

We've progressed a lot from the former to the latter, in human history. What the west has done since 2001 has done a lot to undermine that. And now Putin is taking advantage of the fragility of the international order to assert Russian power and stick two fingers up at the west.

Is the west hypocritical to oppose him? For sure. But I think I'd like for the rules-based way of doing things to come back in vogue. It felt like a safer place.

(And yes, this is a massive simplification of international relations theory and practice, it's a cycling board not a PhD defence).

  • Agreed. USA/UK/Blackwater were and are d*cks in Iraq/Afghanistan. Russia are being dix now.

We should oppose all disgusting action and morality wherever it happens. The West is right to criticise Russia here because they have invaded a sovereign nation. But they would be more right to also criticise their own foreign policy too.

Cycling supervenes on EVERY OTHER WAY OF LOOKING AT THINGS. :)

  • ^^^ I don't think that your argument is different than mine.
