... and worry that maybe in future generations people won't know how to survive without the latest mod cons.
I think that we're all incredibly resourceful when needs be. Just look at prisons.
I always used to love the idea of doing this sort of survival stuff. Then I watched a documentary called Dark Days. If you haven't seen it you should. Not to ruin the end plot for any one, but I was amazed at the ingenuity of the people and when they were being moved on, felt so sorry for them. But once you compare their lives in housed accommodation to the way they were living it's night and day.

So do you still hanker for a bit of survival stuff then?
I'll look out for the film - edit it's here http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/dark-days/

Yes definately. But on balance I prefer modern life.
After uni I spent almost a year in Latin America, with a fair chunk of it in the jungle, some parts more survivalist than others.. One of best parts (and rawest) was camping in the Bolivian Amazon with/beside an indigenous community for two weeks. We basically just chilled, soursed food, and trekked inbetween different settlements and into the jungle.
It's such an idic life* in so many ways. There's an abundance of food, water and raw materials. All you have to do is catch food and then harvest some sort of crop from time to time to get cash to buy things like 2-stroke, batteries and (I presume) medicine.
That said from a developed world POV there are obvious things like cold beer, but for me the clincher is that you'll never have film, new books, plays, debates on politics and current affairs, etc. and basically your whole life choices are limited.
/csb
- ignoring all the obvious downsides, like the rife child abuse and domestic violence in lots of indigionous Bolivian communities (which I was not aware of where I was), lack of education, lack of modern medicine, etc.
