Not much in it. Personally I prefer the look of Gran Compes. I have seen much more Goldtecs around on forumengers bikes tho.
They give different chainlines though if that matters.

goldtec= absolutely indestructible.
gran compe were good, but didn't run as nicely as the goldtecs I have.

Not strictly true, but BTED will stand by their product.
I think the axles on the Goldtec are overbuilt.

for bling and bombproof...get profile hubs ;)

Overbuilt works for me... I must say that I'd been running on a rear Phil for over a year and much prefer my new Goldtec... Smoother and solid as fuckin' fuck... Still love the Phil tho'...

Maybe more to do with quality of wheel build than quality of the hub? My Goldtec/CXP33 is still true after 5 years of riding and never being touched with a spoke key so BETD's wheel build quality is definitely alright.
I expect the Goldtecs will be a bit stonger than the Gran Compes but unless you're a serious fixed gear freestyler than either will be strong enough to take a lot of abuse. I'd decide based on looks and chainline.

correct me if i'm wrong, but aren't gran compes just the same as sys ex, ambrosio, etc. but with better bearings?
-
• #14
^ Gran Compes are better.
I have some formulas and they are defo inferior.
However Phils are way better than Gran Compe's, so I suppose they are middle ground.
Having said all this, Formula, System Ex are all run by riders who claim thousands of miles of decent running...
I'd agree with Momentum, get the one you like the best which gives you the ideal chainline.

phils are slightly better than goldtecs. the hub flanges are thicker, making the wheels feel more solid. not a lot though! -
• #16
Which are better **track **hubs?
gran comps
because they give a standard track chainline, goldtec don't.
means you can switch wheels out without changing BB.but for the road, not much in it. Goldtec are decent hubs, but some people big them up a little more than they deserve..
it's a pair of sealed bearings, inside an aluminium shell with an axle running through the middle.

yeah, they're definitely better. i was just saying i thought it was the same shell with different bearings.
my sysex rear hub has been an absolute star mind.
bought it second hand, i've ridden thousands of miles on it, not taken a great amount of care of it, and it's still running perfectly! -

might go against the grain here, just sold a pair of gran-compes and built up some goldtecs, and i think the gran compes might be the better hubs.
i do really like the goldtecs, but the grans seem to be made of a denser material, the spoke holes on the goldtecs went out of shape (that pull mark that comes from tensioning spokes) much faster than the gran compes.
i'm also not a big fan of the slotted type axle they use, especially since the cones/bearing seals float freely from the axle, makes flipping the rear wheel a bit more tedious.
and the outer bolts/washers aren't serrated so don't hold the wheel in place particularly well, especially with the aluminium axle, making it so you can't torque the bolts down as much as you could on phils.
aside from those minor issues though, the goldtecs spin much better than the gran compes, and they're very solid feeling on the road.
i think at the end, aesthetic would be the determining factor...

I love the gran compe, only done about 4 months of daily trashing on them so can't really say on durability yet.
I had the same decision to make, went with the gran compe for the chainline.

Here's a Question for you:
Goldtec Track hub at 135mm or Singlespeed MTB rear hub + bolt on disc cog?
running slightly large tyres.... -
• #22
Someone explain about the chainline with regard to hubs. I've just got a Sugino75 crank and BB (to come) and am looking at wheels now. Was looking at Goldtecs with Velocity rims.

Goldtecs ftw man, I rock da goldtecs and dey rulesss innit, the slightly newer ones also have some cool spacing system to match your chainline perfecto ya get me.
Peace.

Chainline is effectively the aligment between the cog and the chainring, which determines how straight the line is that your chain makes between the two, if that makes sense?
Which are better track hubs?
Im looking into getting either, I know goldtec is more expensive.
I can get both at trade price so I dont mind the costs.
